‘Ghana is free forever’- these were the words of Kwame Nkrumah, the first elected president of the former Gold Coast, on the 6th of March 1957 when Ghana became the first African country to gain independence from colonial rule. Today, more than fifty years later, Ghana is known to be one of the most peaceful and stable countries in Africa (currently host to the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations) and attracting thousands of tourists each year, especially African-Americans coming for inspirational trips to trace their roots and visit the former slave forts scattered along the coast. Nkrumah himself was inspired by the ideas of the Jamaican black activist Marcus Garvey, who founded the Black Star Line, a shipping company to bring African-Americans back to Africa. The black star in Ghana’s national flag is a lasting reference to Garvey.

First Nations electronic pow wow DJ trio A Tribe Called Red have unveiled
“R.E.D.,” their collaboration with Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def), MC
Narcy and Black Bear, a drum group from the Manawan Atikamekw Nation in
Quebec. “R.E.D.” is a scalding song, a bleak beat stacked with synths, shouts
and a flurry of percussion. It’s from A Tribe Called Red’s forthcoming album
‘We Are The Halluci Nation,’ out September 16.

The plight of albinos in Africa is a sad story. Occult beliefs make them the targets of kidnapping, killing and mutilation. But in Malawi, an exceptionally talented street musician named Lazarus is making a stand in defence of fellow albinos, and he's doing it with music. Lazarus's debut album Stomp the Devil will be released in August, 2019. Producer Banning Eyre takes us inside Lazarus's life and music and explores his surprising tale of survival and activism.
