The Vinyl Factory presents the superb new album from world-renowned Vancouver-based artist and musician Rodney Graham and his band. Showcasing his signature blend of rock 'n roll, psychedelia and folk tinged country with a fine line in deft lyricism influenced by Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, Lou Reed and punk, Good Hand Bad Hand is perhaps Graham's most accomplished LP to date.

The packaging is also pretty special - with Graham's classic self-portraiture artwork featuring on bespoke silver foiled gloss coated outer and inner sleeves, housing the album's nine tracks pressed on 180-gram black vinyl.

Though best known as an artist for his films, photographs and installations, music has been a major part of Graham's work throughout his career: from performing with the band 'UJ3RK5' in Vancouver in the late 1970s, through composing soundtracks for slide and film works to, most recently, recordings and performances as a singer-songwriter, including the records Rock is Hard, I'm a Noise Man and his 2007 album Why Look for Good Times?

Artist, film maker and cinematographer Arthur Jafa presented a Listening Session on 9 September 2017 with musicians Steve Coleman, Morgan Craft, Micah Gaugh, Melvin Gibbs, Kokayi Carl Walker, Jason Moran and performance artist Okwui Okpokwasili, celebrating his exhibition ‘A Series of Utterly Improbable, Yet Extraordinary Renditions’ at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery.

The dismembered jazz ensemble improvised simultaneously but separately at secret ‘Black Sites’ across London. The resulting music was live streamed to the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, where Okwui Okpokwasili performed, devising a time-based work accompanying the discordant soundtrack. The Listening Session was recorded direct-to-disc on The Vinyl Factory Lathe, which was installed in the Gallery.

The rising mega talent, multi-instrumentalist, striking bandleader and *actually* ambidextrous musician and producer returns to deliver Ley Lines – a true showcase of her talents. From the horns, to the choir, to the drums, to the rest, everything was written, produced, laid down and mixed by Emma-Jean.

“I wanted to step away from my work as a band leader and do something self-contained. I love improvising in the moment with a band, but wanted to take the chance to create at my own pace and be true to my own vision,” she says.

As a producer and musician, Emma-Jean’s work defies genre boundaries yet still holds deep roots in jazz. As well as being tipped “one of the UK’s most exciting new jazz artists” by Red Bull Music Academy, the one-woman-band production style of Ley Lines has been compared to Stones-Throw heavyweight Madlib.

Just as at home working with the London Symphony Orchestra as she is tearing it down at Total Refreshment Centre, Ley Lines follows Emma-Jean’s acclaimed Walrus EP and maintains her trajectory as one of the most talented young musicians in the business.
