To fully understand the world that the Merovingians came to rule, one must understand the Roman world at the end of the AD 3rd century. Autocratic emperors, economic crises, Christianity at odds with traditional polytheism, and the transition of an antique world into a medieval one, the final centuries of the Roman Empire was the foundation upon which the Middle Ages would form.

Episode 1 - A Roman Summary

The Germanic peoples had existed on the fringes of the Roman Empire ever since the conquests of Gaul by Julius Caesar before the Common Era. Through ecological bounty, foreign military conquests, a weakened Empire, and a bit of luck, the Germanic peoples migrated into the Empire for permanent settlement. With this movement came the introduction of Barbarian customs into the governing state of Rome, and held Europe together (or apart) when they deposed the last Emperor of the West.

Episode 2 - The Barbarian Successors

Kings have returned to Europe, Germanic Kingdoms replaced the waning Roman Empire, and new ambitious leaders vie for power. From Merovech to Clovis, the Merovingian Dynasty sets the stage for Frankish dominion over the Continent. Their style of rulership, diplomacy with Germanic People both within their borders and without, as well as their custom of laws all served as the foundation to let the descendants of the Salian Franks be the most stable and successful state in Europe for centuries to come.

Episode 3 - King Of Franks

Clovis is dead and his four sons are left to rule over a divided kingdom. There are enemies without, enemies within, and one's familial ties hardly keep them safe from palace intrigue. The Frankish armies hone their edge on further Barbarian Kingdoms, ancient rivalries between regions gain their roots, and the structure of Merovingian social organization is tested in the turbulent five decades following the death of their dynasty's founder.
