We like to start the year by wishing you all the best for 2022. It was yet another difficult year and it is important to stay positive and move forward. To kick things off, we have invited the Indian brothers Baburao, better known as Audio Units. 

Audio Units developed their passion for electronic music alongside their interest in machinery and programming. The brothers strive to keep evolving and push their boundaries as far as possible while using technology to realize these goals. 

Their EP and podcast for Dynamic Reflection made us notice their unique sound. A sound inspired by science fiction and their natural environment. By using this sound they challenge listeners to devote themselves to their definition of techno. Start the new year by submitting yourself to the power of Audio Units.

Audio Units joins for DifferentSound Podcast #104.

The aural language of Audio Units is a discourse to comprehend abstract concepts of science, mathematics, and the subconscious. An auricular confession that asks for a little more from the mature listener: to submit themselves; to be satiated with less; for the musical payoffs may be harder to discern but ultimately more gratifying. A merging framework of fact and fantasy, without artistic compromise while remaining oblivious to the surrounding microcosm. A space-time parabola of shapeshifting rhythms and deep electronic atmospheres created using analog waveforms, dense textures, organic dissonances, and abnormal reverberations leading to an expedition without a beginning or end. The Units are brothers Ashwin and Ashrith who spend their time together visiting the deepest realms of techno huddled over their machines and drawing inspiration from science fiction, spatial geometry, architecture, and nature. Their obsession with electronic sounds goes back to the noise of ’80s video games and early introduction to computer programming. Across their discography, their artistic voice is both consistent and sublime, showcasing a unique perspective and technique. With a distinct sound as producers, Audio Units successfully capture and transfer it into their work as DJs. Their performances irradiate with cosmic warmth made possible by a deft, highly technical mixing style taking their audience on a voyage at light speed as a result of an entire lifetime dedicated to electronic music and a deep love of the machines that make it. Beyond their artistry lies a boundless commitment to Beatworx, Afterworx, and Observant. As the
founders of an electronic music school, nightlife agency, and record label, they provide a platform for aspirants to discover and sustain artistic endeavours in the electronic music ecosystem.

DifferentSound invites Audio Units / Podcast #104

Our first mix from the Asian continent is delivered by kingpins @audiounits. Founding not only the outstanding record label @obsmus alongside @dotdatofficial, these distinguished heads of the subcontinent also curate and educate the musical community through various means.

Their Beatworx platform offers producers a glimpse into the inner workings of visionaries in the techno scene while Afterworx amalgamates this artistic vision through in-person events and experiences. 

These brothers wield the power of surgical mixing precision without losing an ounce of the groove.  Their own productions on revered labels such as @bcco, @dynamic-reflection and @newrhythmicrecords have garnered enormous respect in the scene. As you might expect this mix provides dissonant synths, intricate percs and monumental basslines melding perfectly together with transcendent results.

Hold on tight, off the bench come Bangalore duo Audio Units, inbound for two hours of big-room pyrotechnics and gravity-defying manoeuvres. Mix in fevered drum gusts smacking the oomph-o-metre askew, mind-expanding, sci-fi-indebted momentums and a surgical ear for chiseling cutting-edge textures out the deepest deep, and you pretty much get a solid reflection of Audio Unit’s compelling sonic DNA. Hopscotching their way across weatherbeaten 4x4 landscapes, through Bauhausian brutalism and climactic dub divagations, this is techno cut in the silkiest cloth, and primed for total floor obliteration.

Reclaim Your City 518 | Audio Units

Bangalore based duo Audio Units showcases a more downtempo, laid back-side to their aesthetic in Wild City Mix #109.

Brothers Ashwin Baburao and Ashrith Baburao have been making music together as Audio Units since the early 90s. Ashwin had already established himself as a selector by 2000, playing at large festivals and venues across the country, while Ashrith dived into the self-described ‘geekier’, more technological side of things.

Audio Units’ sound traverses a range of styles within experimental, often bass heavy house and techno music tailored to suit the needs of the dance floor. Over the last couple of years, the outfit has managed to release music through labels like Dutchie Music, Deep Edition Recordings, Qilla, Soupherb and many more.

Their charismatic live lets are usually brimming with energy, which is why their laid back mix #109 for Wild City came as a bit of a surprise. The brothers forego the music they usually have to play to cater to club audiences for more downtempo, minimal and melodic electronica best heard on headphones.

Beginning with some trance courtesy H.U.V.A. network, the selection goes on to exhibit an array of experimental electronic tunes by the likes of Detroit based percussionist Shigeto and British producers Raffertie and Rival Consoles. Big names like Four Tet, Moderat and Com Truise follow in the second half along with Audio Units’ original, stellar tune ‘Grainspace’.
