In George MacDonald's "The Romance of Photogen and Nycteris," Vesper  the Dark Lady, is lured to Watho's castle to heal from her husband's untimely death. In a shadowy chamber, she looks upon the night sky, where a full moon shines a silvery light upon her face. Nature's sounds outside bring comfort to her as she intones a melancholy tune into the evening.
