This track contains elements from unfinished projects I worked on throughout the year in 2022.

I used Ableton Live, Push and - more recently - Note to arrange software instruments and effects. In some of the projects, I recorded myself playing acoustic drums and percussion.

The most difficult part about creating this track was choosing which projects to associate with each month. At first I tried to use projects that I created or last modified in a particular month, but I found that my workflow does not follow that kind of pattern. Ultimately, I came up with a group of projects I worked on chronologically that I can associate in my mind with each month of the year.

I held a glass with ice up to one of my overhead condenser microphones and recorded the sounds into Ableton. I dragged the audio files into Simpler devices on different tracks and came up with the percussive sound you hear in the intro and throughout the track. After that, I limited myself to sounds and presets that contained the word "ice," "freeze," "froze" and "chill" to create the remaining layers. After that, I created an arrangement and recorded myself playing drums over top. Thank you for listening!

When I read the prompt, a few things came to mind that I have been telling myself I will get around to this year. First, I have been watching these videos of a drummer running the audio from his drums through a guitar pedalboard and I wanted to start exploring that. I also wanted to start learning more about programming in Max for Live. And finally, I have been meaning to add some video content to the music I am sharing. I can honestly say that I would not have initiated ANY of these projects this week but for the prompt.

My submission is what I came up with first when I tried to set up a virtual “pedalboard” in Ableton on my drum bus using guitar effects. The result is not my typical musical output or what I was hoping to accomplish, but I am sharing it anyway to honor my efforts this week.

As the week went on, I found time here and there to watch tutorials on Max for Live and I even got to the point where I was able to record with some of the effects I created. Ultimately, I ran out of time to finish any, but if it were not for the prompt, I am not sure when I would have started my Max for Live journey.

Finally, I have been meaning to add video recording to my setup. I haven’t shared a video of myself playing the drums in many years and I found encouragement in this process to do so.

Meet You There (naviarhaiku471)

As a drummer, I loved this prompt. When I started thinking about improvising a shaker, I kept coming back to the idea of making something that I would keep and actually be able to use in the future. I had always wanted one of those shakers that are just a cluster of shells tied together. I found that you can buy those types of shells online, but I was not sure where to get them on short notice. So, I figured wood beads would work and took a trip to the craft store. I tried not to spend too much time making the shaker and to make sure I prioritized actually making music with it. I could have spent more time on both efforts, but I am still happy with the results. For recording, I played the shaker into my snare microphone with different patterns and then laid it down on my snare and played my drums over that. The resulting recording was not that interesting at first, but I added effects and chopped up my drums to come up with this track.

I was born in the year of the pig, or - according to my quick internet research - the water pig. Sometimes when I am getting a track started, I will try to only use sounds and presets that contain certain words. There was only one that contained the word "pig" and quite a few with the word "water." I didn't really like any of the parts I was writing and one of the sounds was a particularly unpleasant squeak. As unpleasant as it was, it did sound like the squeak of some small animal - like a rabbit. From there, I let my rabbit spirit ally take over and I think the result is on theme. I especially like the thumping kick pattern. I turned down the squeaking sound so it isn't audible, but I know it is still in there.
