2016 Acoustic Time Capsule

Its all a bit hit and miss but its surprising what you can muster up with this thing..  this evening a sort of raspy bowed electric cello sound emerged which really came to life after putting it through a very short delay.  This is pure raw waveform generation from the analog optical waveform scanner - no dynamic filtering or even EQ has been used in this case.

In an Acoustic Ecology lens, the following sonic piece explores how humans have adopted strategies to navigate through the open sea and learned how to mediate from catastrophe. As a first timer in the region, I am interested in the ways a person makes sense of the environment and how the community responds to natural events and emergency situations at sea. Specifically, I want to connect listeners to the history of Bamfield following the Valencia Shipwreck in 1906, and how its geographic position determined the establishment of the Lifesaving Station. The unfortunate incident also led the creation of the West Coast Trail, formerly called Dominion Life-Saving Trail intended for survivors who make it to shore. Therefore, my sonic project attempts to depict the soundscape of the region filled with wildlife and marine activity. I draw from personal recordings collected within Barkley Sound and from Ocean Networks Canada online soundbank. Furthermore, in attempt to harmonize the continuous interaction between humans and the environment, I also resorted to the Bamfield Historical Society’s archives for digitized interviews conducted in 1995. Namely, I use the voices of Dave Hegstrom, Joe Garcia and Robert Bruce Scott for this composition since they provide important historical facts about growing up and establishing a life in a marine community.
