08 A Change In Creative Direction

Join us as we think about what’s true and what’s fabricated in storytelling. In autobiographical fiction, the author tells a fictional story using elements from her own life. It’s also been said that all fiction contains autobiography and some nonfiction may be less than factual. Consider also the massive stream of storytelling in social media. When it comes to our timelines, what stories are we telling about ourselves? What stories do we perceive in our friend's feeds? Whether based on the ambiguous nature of autobiographical fiction, or the choices we make when participating in social media, the distinctions between fic and nonfic are often murky. In this episode Davi shares an autobiographical fiction piece, “Mall Story,” that’s part recollection and part fiction about the awkward and inevitable moment when you run into someone from your past at the mall. In “Online Persona,” Erin discusses storytelling in social media: how we curate ourselves, whether we overshare or leave out certain parts of our lives.
