First main point (strongest)
Consent
Wax play will involve the burning sensations, marks on skin and overall heat of the wax depending on the altitude, coloring, type and blend of wax.  Could even be just the scent of the specific candle itself that your partner likes or dislikes.    All these reasons are important why consent is important here specifically, but as we talk about often,  consent is required for anything we do in the lifestyle. 
Example
The Wax & Candles
Types of wax to use,
 Soy candle – Has a melting point of 110F and often used in massage oil candles.  Typically can find these online  between $4 - $15  (This is often the most recommended and used type.)
Shea Butter Candle – Melting point range is between 89F – 100F.  Another wax often used in massage oil candles.  Price range $13 - $30 online.
Parraffin Wax -   Has a melting point around 120F.  Price range online between $5 - $30
Types of wax to avoid.
 Beeswax – Advise not to use this type of wax or candle due to it’s higher melting point between 145F – 170F.  This type of wax is industrial and made to burn hotter and longer then those mentioned above.  Example would be a candle bought from your local retail chain that is scented.
Prep and Setup
Negotiate limits, aftercare and safewords before engaging in play.
Prepare your space for the play to come.
 Dimming of lights, a sexy playlist,  laying a towel or plastic sheet down wear you will be playing,  move flammable items away from the playspace,  have fire safety items near by in case of emergency.
Prepping the body.  
 It is usually advice to shave the area’s where you expect the wax play to happen.  Use body lotion or oil before engaging in wax play to help with wax clean off and potentially avoid skin irritation.
Test the wax from a safe distance on yourself rather then your partner to be sure it is the wax you believe it to be.  
Second main point (second strongest)
Clean up and aftercare
Having an old towel or plastic covering or even sometimes a tarp to make the after play clean up not only safer but much easier as well.
Perhaps taking a shower together after the play to help remove excess wax residue and a way of doing more aftercare together.
Have time set aside for further aftercare if needed.
Pouring and Dripping
What not to do first.  Never pour wax on open wounds and avoid pouring wax above the shoulders.
Distance -  Dripping or pouring further away from the skin allows the wax time to cool and is safer due to that.  Of course, exercise this caution with negotiated pain tolerances and limits to further judge the pouring or dripping distance.
A slow dripping is typically described as a way of building up desire during foreplay for some.  Where pouring on a partner’s back for example, while rubbing their erogenous zone can be at a point of high desire within the scene.   This of course will all depend on you and your partners desires and negotiated pre-play expectations. 
Communication
Communication is key  here much like everything we do in BDSM requires that communication.
Communication does not end once the play starts,  it is maintained throughout the experience and should be spoken about in the pre-play prep as well.   
Be present.  Always be present when playing with your partner, and do not engage in 
wax play if not sober.   As simply being under the influence can greatly change
