This album features iconic percussion works by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steve Reich, whom The Village Voice deemed, “America’s greatest living composer.” Reich’s music has influenced artists ranging from art-pop and rock musicians Brian Eno and David Bowie to composers John Adams and Bang on a Can co-founders Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe.

Works featured on the album include Mallet Quartet, Sextet, Nagoya Marimbas, and Music for Pieces of Wood.

JaRon Brown is a composer with his bachelor’s degree in music composition from The University of South Carolina. He has studied composition under the direction of Dr. John Fitz Rogers and Dr. David K. Garner, as well as percussion with Dr. Scott Herring and Dr. Brett Landry. While at The University of South Carolina, he has had the luxury of premiering four of his most recent works Fragmented Shards of Crystallized Water (2015), Neurobaloo (2016), RIPEHEART (2017), and Giant Woman (2017). Most recently he provided original music for an all new original play script entitled "Growing up Alice" for the Blythewood High School drama team under the direction of Sandra Dietel, which won the South Carolina division in competition in 2017. cope (2017) for vibraphone and tape

Premiered Friday, April 14 at The Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University amongst a multimedia exhibition entitled "Convergence: Digital Media and Technology" 

I began writing "cope" in December 2016 after my dear friend, Matthew Reynolds, asked me to present a piece at a Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration his campus was hosting the following month. An early sketch of the piece was presented at his campus in January 2017. My initial reactions to the idea of writing a piece for such an event in a time of political unrest caused me to feel a bit overwhelmed. 

"cope" is born out of a desire to deconstruct systems, to simplify and rationalize a set of specific ideas in search of the ideal––a somewhat dangerous notion depending on where you call home. It is not an inherently political work. (Although, one of the earliest sketches was dedicated to the memory of Eric Garner, whose finale, pleading, haunting words were (eleven times over), “I can’t breathe,” as several officers squeezed and pressed the life out him on a sidewalk. This inclination was overcome and the dedication struck for several reasons.) To me, this piece is a reprieve, an opportunity to simply reflect.

The four members of Third Coast Percussion are also accomplished teachers, and ensemble-in-residence at Denison University.
