Sinethemba Mahlangu is from Zola, Soweto, South Africa. Third Ear received some demos from him in 2019 and since then have mentored him and encouraged his talent. The Unorthodox Flow EP is his first release. We are proud and excited to now share his music with the world. The EP shows a prodigious talent creating a original form of music. His choice of tempos demonstrates a fearless approach, while his sounds and arrangements show a knowledge and understanding of house and classic soul and jazz, with an experimental edge.

The fresh rhythms and absorbing ambient designs continue on two more tracks that make this an exquisite EP.

Thomas Brinkmann creates a new moniker for his latest project to push technical limitations and challenge perceptions; classic Brinkmann agendas. Mele is Italian for Apples, and with Mele Boy, Thomas Brinkmann uses Apple Loops and Apple Logic Pro as the foundation of this music, invoking what he terms Apple Incest, apropos the controversy surrounding Serge Gainsbourg and the song Lemon Incest. What he has produced here for the Seduction ep is simply brilliant music regardless of the machines used or the sounds he works with, reinforcing the axiom that it's the artist not the tools that establishes the greatness of the work.. Those who are prejudiced against such ubiquitous tools may not be swayed. But Brinkmann is not attempting to change opinions, instead he is asking us to challenge our perceptions and the fact that we have prejudices at all... through some brilliant music for the body and the soul.

This EP is 6 unreleased tracks in the Thomas Brinkmann celebrated Max Ernst series of 12", all with female names, released with names ordered alphabetically. Starting with. 1. Anna Beate, the series ran for 12 releases over the 2 years from 1998 to 2000. 2. Clara Doris 3. Erika Frauke 4. Gisela Heidi 5. Inge Jutta 6. Karin Lotte 7. Monika Nikola 8. Olga Petra 9. Susie Trixi 10. Ulla Vera 11. Wanda Xenia 12. Yvette Zara, followed. There was never an ep with Q and R. Number 9 is Susie and Trixie. The tapes were lost. But have come to light nearly 25 years later. So now, here is Q/R; Quila 1-3 and Romy 1-3. What we have here are the original tracks as intended for release, with some minor editing and rearranging for release now. The original series was very successful. The first 3 12", released at the same time were a sensation on release. Suddenly, Thomas Brinkmann was the name to check. Today, these Quila/Romy tracks may well have the same impact as the other tracks in the series had when they were released. There is still nothing that sounds like this music. It seems to be an example of a perfect melding of soul and machine. 25 five years later... a annniversary of sorts, offered up by the machines.

What's the girl mean? Her words are clear enough. Is she talking to me? Moonlight has a lighter touch with an off beat skanking feel. We're feeling nice. Don't Give Up is a transition track taking things up close to peak time. Denite works these grooves with aplomb.

Third Ear's Detroit Beatdown series was instrumental in redefining the perception of Detroit electronic music abroad. Now we come to the final Detroit Beatdown release. Four Detroit artists giving us as good an ep as any of the releases in the series. The tracks by Mike Clark and Rick Wade rank amongst their best, for sure. DJ-T1000, a Detroit producer and DJ known for some of the city's hardest Techno, surprises with a stripped-back groove that is pure electronic Funk. Wrapping up the ep is Scott Ferguson's A Groove, a heavy skanking groove with that classic Beatdown rawness. Before the Detroit Beatdown Volume One compilation in October 2002 was released, Detroit was known primarily for Techno. Moodymann, Kelli Hand, and Terrence Parker were the only artists from Detroit known in Europe and Japan who were thought to make House music (Theo Parrish was not regarded as a House producer). Detroit Beatdown Volume One changed all that. The Detroit Beatdown series introduced many of the Detroit artists who are now well known representatives of the music scene of the City of Detroit; Delano Smith, Norm Talley, Keith Worthy, Pirahnahead, Mike Clark, to name the most well-known. Kelli Hand came to the attention of new generations of DJs and fans through the Detroit Beatdown series of releases on Third Ear. Drivetrain (Derrick Thompson), DJ Minx, Reggie Dokes, Ibex (Tony Ollivierra) all delivered classic tracks through the series. Artist's such as Patrice Scott had the door opened for them by The Detroit Beatdown sound. Theo Parrish's Falling Up on Detroit Beatdown Volume One has become one of his signature tracks. The truth is, The original Detroit Beatdown DJs, Mike Clark, Norm Talley, and Delano Smith, never only played House music. The Beatdown sound of Detroit was very inclusive, playing Techno releases from the city all the while, and often long before they were picked up in Europe and beyond. As an example, anyone who experienced the Detroit Beatdown DJs will know that Norm Talley was one of the first DJs playing Omar S records some time before Omar S was well-known. Detroit Beatdown tracks have come to be regarded as Detroit House music. Yet, in the city, music is just music and the genre boundaries applied outside the community of artists aren't used or recognized. This is most evident in the playlists of the Detroit Beatdown DJs. But this fact is also there to be heard on all the Detroit Beatdown releases.

Ultra Random Analog Orchestra is a new project by Brendon Moeller. Starting by sculpting an audio collage in realtime, using a eurorack modular system, Brendon Moeller keeps randomness at the front of his methodology. Whether inputting found samples or designing sounds from scratch using oscillators and/or noise sources, he begins haphazardly sequencing, filtering, modulating and arranging the randomness. A spirit of experimentation and spontaneity drives these productions. In adopting this approach, Brendon has produced tracks which are unlike anything he has produced before. Others have his hallmarks, but we chose to go for the tracks that show him moving outside the box. Sometimes wayout. EP1 will be followed by EP2 and EP3 over the course of 2023.

Mike Agent X Clark returns to Third Ear with four new tracks. His first release for the label in six years, after the River People Edits reworking of the great Weather Report track. This ep, four originals, is very much a Detroit Beatdown vibe. The quality and variety which is typical of many Detroit releases is very evident here. Is it house? Is it techno? Is it disco? These genre-defining labels don't really come into the minds of many Detroit producers when making tracks, the music they create often seamlessly blends many genres. What is recognisably Detroit is the weight and the swing of these releases; they do not mess around, and Mike Clark is a master of this.

All the tracks on Alex Burkat's latest release, the ep 285 Kent are references to, homages to, and an elegy for various NY clubs and clubbing experiences. Alex Burkat, resident of Brooklyn NYC, lands on (in?) Third Ear with an ep that further develops the sound he has been imagining since he was inspired to write Shower Scene, his to-date, most well-known track. Shower Scene, which was subsequently released on the Mr Saturday Night label, was conceived while returning from a Mr Saturday Night party. Clearly, the clubbing experience, in particular in New York is still an inspiration to Alex Burkat's music. 285 Kent was a well-known DIY warehouse venue that hosted Punk, House and Techno parties in Brooklyn that closed only recently in January 2014. Sullivan Rom in the West Village of NY is a well-known House party venue. The BQE is the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. The track evokes for Alex, people speeding to and/or from NY parties. House Of Yes, the name of another famous DIY New York venue that closed in the Summer of 2013 was where Mister Saturday Night threw their Saturday night parties. All four tracks are distinctive. Alex Burkat has his sound now. It may not be the only sound he ever creates, and given his propensity for evocation his catalogue will probably be prodigious and varied. For now, he is honing in on his subject; the rapidly evolving club scene based around Brooklyn in New York. There is soul in these tracks and a refreshing lack of artifice. For all the wide-eyed imagination and wide-screen soundscapes (huge bass and shimmering sonics out on the perimeters), there is no sentimentality; just a forward-looking gaze that takes in the past and the future with clarity and honesty.

Two tracks from Wbeeza’s long-awaited second album and the return of Brendon Moeller to Third Ear are the main events of this, the August 2015 Third Ear podcast.  There is also another track from B.Riddim’s wonderful new ep, due in September. We’ve dug out Soul Designer’s Evolutionism and DJ Minx’s Lavender Lust, both of which still sound as fresh as the day they were released. Dopeus’ ‘Don’t I Need You’ gets another work out. We can’t stop playing it, and we’re not the only ones it seems. His Getaway ep is becoming a classic. Tracks by Denite and Stefny Winter demonstrate why so many DJs regard Third Ear so highly; these tunes are high quality DJ tools that work every time. Then there is Benjamin Brunn’s ‘No Kicks’. The XDB remix might be better known, but with Diamondancer’s full flow only on the original mix and with Benjamin’s poised, floating, asymmetric groove shimmering all around it, this beautiful track needs to be heard. The podcast opens with one of the Insync 1991 Bedroom Tape edits which Pole expertly teased off a TDK SA cassette to bring it to the sound systems of the world.

Persian Ahu Karimi is a Berlin resident. He began his musical exploits in a punk band in Tehran but time and space and inertia have distilled his music into a rare spiritual essence, with a delicacy and evanescence like memory. The five tracks here have a gauze like quality. The music is like ether. The opening track Shoone Beh Sar transfixes. It is totally captivating. This is ambient music of the highest quality. Next up is Longing. It is the logical next step after Shoone Beh Sar. It has a shuffling groove so does not initially appear to be an ambient track. But the ambience is in the detail, which slowly unfolds over 9 minutes. Roya begins beat-less, and very languid. A glitchy beat begins early, but the initial languidity is never dispelled; only intensified. Nebel In Sancsouri is next. Even though it has a distinctly jacking groove, the delicate intensity that has already been established through the ep defines the track. At this point, a vibe of seduction by sunlight is complete; then broken by an arresting darkness. Final track Simorgh is crackling electronics and hum. Restless and inexorable. A surprise, a wake up, leaving the listener unsettled after the comfort and narcotic beauty of the preceding tracks. Probably just as well. After listening to the preceding tracks, it seems possible that the listener could remain spellbound.

Alejandro Mosso – Isolation Diaries

Isolation Diaries is Argentinian producer Alejandro Mosso’s 2nd album. It comes more than ten years after his debut, Hiperborea in 2005. The album’s title comes from the artist’s decision to distance himself from the world of electronic music and from his usual routines, to find a clarity of vision and purpose that would allow him to reach new vistas of artistic expression and emotional depth in music. He also consciously tried to bring the young, free, naïve and impulsive spirit of his earliest forays into music making, together with the experience, structure and professionalism that he has learned and harnessed in more recent times. He says “I think the album is warm, emotive and nostalgic but not dark nor sad. It is percussive and melodic but not laid back and Balearic. It is tribal and organic but still very precise”, as only electronic music can be. Voluntarily imposing a set of parameters and strategies can often be liberating. This is very evident in this music, which feels very unselfconscious and free.  The grooves are strong and infectious and the sounds are rich and satisfying, resulting in music that sounds very organic and unpremeditated. Which means Alejandro Mosso very successfully achieved what he set out to do. The album is accompanied by a Burnt Freidman remix of the track Isolation Diaries, and a Ricardo Villalobos remix of Deardrum.
