Lisbon veteran and scene agitator Citizen:Kane has been reverently experimenting with the limits of electronic music in the past few years, bringing a much-needed generosity and curiosity to the artistic practice in the community.

Paraíso are lucky enough to have his new album on Rave Tuga. Titled 'The Last Whistle', it concisely and soulfully encapsulates his signature sound-spirit, one where synths can sing and drum machines laugh and cry. Cinematic drones and sci-fi bleeps invite us to an otherworldly realm on the opener, 'Cujo Fujo'.

Dark, energetic arpeggiated basslines continue to haunt us perfectly as we step into the B side, with echoes of EBM and industrial creating the otherwise swingy techno heavy-hitter that is 'The Mad Parade'. Things get headier and trippier as we dive deeper into the album, with ambient and slow jams that manage to marry the celestial and the austere.

A label that has pathed careers for the likes of Nightwave, Hodge, Special Request/Paul Woolford and many more, DEXT Recordings announce 'Blizzard'; a fresh 12" from the enigmatic Russian techno-head, Dawn Razor.

Following releases on A R T S, Scuffed and Holding Hands to name but a few, he is best known for both his live performances and DJ sets of broken beat techno, electro, mutated bass, post-trance and everything in between.

Title track 'Blizzard' launches the listener into oblivion with murky, travelling sub-low that whirls around a breakbeat and razor-sharp snares that attack like mosquitos.

'Vacant Crew' follows with an intense and rolling pulse of claustrophobic builds that clasp you in an electrifying position.

On remix duties enters Desert Sound Colony (Holding Hands/Dr Banana), portraying his own inimitable two-step spin on 'Blizzard'. Utilising the pads to create a unique air that sits around a playful and warm bassline, the choice of remixer truly sits perfectly with the overall palate of the record.

'Synchro' is a syncopated stepper with broken-beat Techno qualities and a shocking drop that draws you in and pushes you back out.

Closing out the EP is 'Dub Lead'; a digi-bonus track with garage-tinged breaks and mammoth bass modulations, sitting among atmospheric pads that float you further out to space.

Born and raised in Cairo, ZEYAD entered the electronic party scene in 2017 with an enthusiasm for minimal, house, and techno. A year later, he began working with boogie platform Desimana as a party promoter, which led him to promoting for Glasshouse, Outside, Jellyzone, Funkhaus, and even our own Noise Sessions.

Somewhere in between then and now, ZEYAD began mixing, practicing through the Strictly Vinyl course with Ahmed Samy in 2019, as his love for minimal and house made way for the fast-paced bounciness of electro and breaks.

Dear friends, do you like gummy bears, squidgy strawbs, liquorice or rather marshmallows? Leipzig based producer Littlelake kicks off on Brombért with an EP, that has it all in its paper sleeve. “Mixed Bag” is a four tracker, which sounds like taking your sugar overdose from the candy store straight to your favourite warehouse party. With “Long Time Ago” and its gravitational drive, the funky lucidity of “Another Lovesong”, the splendid walking bass of “Padang Padang” or swinging sawtooth anthem “Yam Bean”, “Mixed Bag” is a typical Brombért-Release: rich in detail, engineered rigorously, nevertheless it always has a couple of screws loose. As Littlelake puts it himself: “Brombért looks a bit odd, but he’s actually very nice.” Physical release comes with handcrafted, screen printed artwork by fabulous graphic artist Zatina Kessl.

Increasingly essential New York City dance music DIY label Sorry Records teamed up with DJ/producer and “dance music historian” Chrissy (Hooversound, Pets Recordings, Dansu Discs) and Lisbon-based DJ/producer/vocalist Maria Amor (Paraíso, Naivety) for the debut of their new project Community Theater — a technicolor ode to vocal freestyle, electro, and semi-forgotten strains of club-oriented dance-pop. Sorry Records’s first-ever physical release — Having Everything EP delivers four stellar original vocal club tracks alongside standout remixes from Naive head Violet, Sorry Records family Escaflowne, LA rave queen Bianca Oblivion, and Portuguese producer/visual artist Shcuro. Taking freestyle nostalgia into the modern world via digital and cassingle tape release, Community Theater’s Having Everything EP provides a supremely pleasurable and much-needed perspective to the way we look backward at the club sounds of the 1980s. Bolting Bits is happy to share the premiere for Violet’s remix of the title track.

Simultaneously bringing the sort of energy you’d expect to be bumping out of a native New Yorker’s minivan as they cruise through Bay Ridge, Having Everything EP manages to create a special sonic embodiment of all things ADIDAS tracksuit… a manic combo of genre and attitude that evoked the energy of NYC in the 80s. Right out the gate, “Let Me Party” channels Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with a forlorn party anthem that encourages us to put off our problems and just give in to hedonistic dancefloor abandon. The title track proceeds in a more modern way though. An intense driving bassline matches an aggressive vibe and lyrics about something that everyone can rally against — trust fund kids.

Having Everything certainly has a lot! The b side originals “The Same Place” and “Another Of Me” deeply channel a sort of funky upbeat Chemical Plant Zone feel that relieves the tension of the title track and soothes in its energetic glee. As “Another Of Me” channels goofy disco vanity, “The Same Place” lays down the funk, evoking a bit of Michael Jackson even, whilst bringing the vocals forward a couple years.

Remix duty falls on Escaflowne, Bianca Oblivion, Violet, and Shcuro who are dutifully and excellently on brand. Escaflowne keeps the tracksuit on but tosses “Let Me Party” across the pond, putting forth a stellar 2-step UKG treatment. Bianca Oblivion busts out the cardboard for a fantastic breakin’ electro remix of “Another of Me.” On the Lisbon end of things — Violet and Shcuro abstract their entries a bit with the Naive label head creating a pumping gothic rendition of “Having Everything,” as Shcuro (who designed the artwork of the release as well) provide a sort of ambient acid electro take on “The Same Place.”

A stellar release from Sorry Records that hopefully stands as an excellent and much-needed kick-off to the forthcoming 80s freestyle revival. Get your hands on a copy here!

David Agrella returns to his Agrellomatica Records with the trippy house sounds of ‘Freedom Unfolding’, featuring remixes from N-Gynn & Beroshima. Italian-born, London-based DJ and producer David Agrella’s reputation as one of the city’s must-check selectors continues to blossom as he explores the many shades of electronic music through his Bloop radio show and Agrellomatica Records imprint. Fresh from the label’s second release ‘Robot Romance’, supported by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Fred P, Jane Fitz, Jennifer Cardini and Rossko, Agrella returns to close March via his spaced-out house EP ‘Freedom Unfolding’. Remixes are delivered by London favourite N-Gynn (Pleasure Club) known for drawing on left-field, ravey sounds and esteemed German live techno act and Muller Records/Acid Orange boss Beroshima. Elastic basslines and tumbling percussion unfasten the A-Side with ‘Walking Loud’ as sinister synths convulse around the beat before N-Gynn provides a frisky reshape with sharp snares, golden keys and subtle, loopy vocal samples on a chuggier tip. The eclectic experience continues on the B-Side with title track ‘Freedom Unfolding’ as swinging basslines carry dream-like pads and fluttering samples, while Beroshima’s acid-infused, broken beat rework provides an anthemic finale to the release.
