MBE Series founder Giovanni Napolano continues his research of the Mediterranean, offering up his own personal Porta Del Mediterraneo.

Unfolding along two sprawling 15 min sides, Napolano stitches threads of chopped & screwed folksong with a discrete dub strategy, seamlessly leading the mind down labyrinthine ginnels of his imagination in a sort of uchronic regression session where the ghosts of the past inform the present. In the process it humbly speaks to Naples’ position at the frontier of the current migrant crisis, and necessarily takes a standpoint against Italy’s resurgent, nationalist fascism, revealing the beauty and energy of its indigenous mixture of peoples, rather than erecting borders between them. 

Taking his native Naples as a locus of Mediteranean culture, Napolano plunges the port city’s palimpsest of energies embedded by successive waves of Greek, Northern African & Eastern migration to discover an underlying, rhizomic connection and commonality linked by dub and hip hop as a contemporary iteration of folk music. 

Under its titular, mythical metaphor for the fall of Babylon, and usage in Rastafari culture, ‘Le Macerie Di Babilonia’ imaginatively examines a sense of self via a historic lens, drawing on Napolano’s upbringing in the chaotic port city and his autodidactic research into the rich mosaic of Napolitan heritage, to model how a folk class solidarity and shared character, with its own rules and rituals, has emerged from its syncretic milieu. 

Variously a treatise on provenance; an impressionistic tale of the European north meets a global south; a dub-abstracted, allegoric, ethnomusicological collage; ‘Le Macerie Di Babilonia’ is a fascinating and immersive listen that presents its maker’s dilated world view at its most mesmerising.

q. pls introduce yourself
my name is gabriel, I make music under the moniker gab_i - currently based in copenhagen, denmark.

q. is there a story behind the mix? how did it come together?
no particular story, just a collage of songs to help with the seasonal transition. this mix was recorded during the earlier stages of fall. I thought it could bring some form of warmth and colour to the indoors, in a quiet bedroom or a living room, for instance.

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?
somewhere indoors with a good set of speakers or in transit (my personal fav).

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...
probably a “trompe oeil” drape that belonged to my grand mother. it reminds me of her and the living room where it used to hang. it has followed in every place I’ve lived in over the years.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
quite a few, yes! as part of my studies, I’m currently in the process of completing my internship at torso electronics, an electronic music hardware company from copenhagen with the most wonderful peeps. alongside of that, I spend the majority of my spare time making music, pondering about what instruments to build next, and most importantly, gathering up the courage to finalizing a project/ep (hopefuly soon…x)

Mister Water Wet is the alias of Iggy Romeu - producer, DJ, and fixture based out of the Kansas City scene that produced West Mineral Ltd and C Minus, among myriad other great producers and DJs. Always intriguing, Romeu’s music drifts into vague, enigmatic territory - channeling 90’s ambient, fourth world, exotica, and library to forge a sound that is uniquely his own. On a dreary, rainy night in late January, Mister Water Wet brought his signature sound to Nina HQ.

Fast’s deeply psychedelic, glitched-out textures tap dance atop spacious, subby tones. Their taste and tracks never stray far from the natural world, ever-invoking river flows, sliding, sludgy mud and the frantic bug dance above. With a clear thread to IDM and downtempo of the past, Fast’s sound is fresh, reanimating the clicks and cuts of the 90s/00s for today’s ambient tastes. Fast converges the cold, knowing stillness of that era with more playful, swaggy cyber sounds.

Keep an eye out for upcoming work from them as there are projects in the works.

In their prods and this mix, you can hear their penchant for introspection and deep feeling. This foggy minimix is at times ice cold; at others, fuzzy and warm. Thick, sludgy, wubby, chuggers are increasingly sliced by razor-sharp glitches, carving out space for reverbed and cavernous phases, stoking self-reflection and pause. 

Fast weaves a trippy cocoon, a vast and horizonless inner world, not shying away from difficult moments but always creating space for positivity and clarity.
