This CD features the world-premiere recording of Peter Hallock’s Advent Calendar sung by the Byrd Ensemble, under the direction of Mardavin Obenza.

Advent Calendar, a setting of a poem by Rowan Williams, was commissioned by The Compass Rose Society to honor Archbishop Williams on the occasion of his retirement. Its premier performance was sung by the Canterbury Cathedral choir under the directions of Dr. David Flood at the service of Evensong, October 5, 2012. Archbishop Dr. Rowan Williams and Mrs. Williams were in attendance.

"4 motets pour un temps de pénitence" are among the most dramatic and harmonically complex writings by Francis Poulenc (1899 - 1963).  Known for embracing the musical trends of the twentieth century while still honoring his traditional upbringing, Poulenc purportedly said it was possible to "write new music using other people's chords."  This Passiontide motet is both arresting and tender; reflecting the intensity of the text ("Darkness and fear have overcome me") and the inner tension Poulenc experienced between his conservative past and his modern Parisian present.
