HYPERCUBE has built a reputation on high-energy performances with impressive execution. The NYC-based quartet embraces the boundaries of chamber music, featuring cutting-edge works for saxophone, guitar, piano and percussion, while spanning electric and acoustic worlds. From championing original works such as Louis Andriessen’s Hout, Philippe Hurel’s Localized Corrosion, and Chaya Czernowin’s Sahaf, to commissioning new works by composers Nicholas Deyoe, Farzia Fallah, Eric Wubbels, Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh, Daniel Tacke, Erin Rogers, Amin Sharifi, Nomi Epstein, Christopher Adler, and Juan Trigos, HYPERCUBE has collaborated with composers such as Sam Pluta and Chris Cerrone, to freshly adapt works for the quartet. HYPERCUBE is Erin Rogers (saxophones), Jay Sorce (classical & electric guitar), Andrea Lodge (piano & accordion), and Chris Graham (percussion).

Hypercube x Nevermind the Noise

Tonecycle Base 30 Hz, 2:3:7 consists of the linear superposition of 77 sine wave frequencies based on the invariant harmonic ratios 2, 3 and 7. Each of the sine wave frequency components gradually separates from each of the other components over time while ascending at slightly different rates of speed, and then descending toward the starting frequencies, infinitely revolving as in circles. These extremely close frequencies and their harmonics constantly produce beat cycles that traverse through a continuum of phase angles. The motion of the tones is extremely slow and therefore, the sense of the pitch shift practically imperceptible. However, because the tones are moving in constant speed toward the same direction and the relationship of corresponding frequencies remains relativistically invariant, it creates the aural illusion that the frequencies of tones remain unchanged. Rather, the interactions of the moving sine waves create the gradual development of distinctive melodic and rhythmic patterns over time as the result of the acoustical phenomenon of phase interference.

I've experienced chronic insomnia for several years. This piece was written following a sleepless night, and attempts to capture the hazy and disorienting but familiar feeling of the middle of the day feeling later than nighttime.

"Resonator" accentuates the resonant qualities of Hypercube's instrumentation, accumulating a cloud of droning overtones above a fast and rhythmic quartet. While much of my music consists of long-form unfolding processes, this music is full of abrupt interruptions, inspired by Tony Conrad's essay "A Few Remarks Before I Begin": "Attention needs guideposts for focus. Exploration of alternative attentiveness is a valuable cultural commodity."

Two Thousand Times I've Screamed (2020)

Alex Ring Gray is a composer, performer, and multimedia artist. With projects spanning the concert hall, sound installations, and electronic mediums, his work is concerned with psychoacoustics, environment, and process. Heavily involved as an improviser, his music is often characterized by a deeply physical performance practice juxtaposed with rich drone textures.

Based in New York, Alex works as music assistant to Philip Glass, helping with his new scores and productions. He is a close collaborator of the organizations Nief-Norf and InfraSound. He recently completed his MM at NYU, where he studied with Michael Gordon and Julia Wolfe.

Nevermind the Noise is New York University's graduate composer collective, committed to the composition and performance of new, experimental music throughout NYC.
