They tell me it was all wrong
but I feel all right

Would you think that I was guilty if I told you why
I'm only here because I crossed the imaginary line

I'm tired of playing this game with imaginary lines
They told us we were all wrong
but they the ones that commit the crime

They put our children in a cage because we didnt pay the fine
I think its time we tear down that imaginary line

A choral piece written for an 8-part choir. The lyrics and the music are written by me; below I've included the complete poem, which had to be trimmed down for the composition.

I began the writing process by writing the poem, with the intention of setting the text to choral music. I’ve done what I can with my mortal understanding of music to “wordpaint,” or use the text as the basis for the sound of the music. As a result, many of the mentions of the stars are supplemented by rather tight harmonies, which is my attempt at painting shimmering clusters of stars with my voice. 


We are stardust…
We are freeform…
We are changing…

The lightning storm in tempest rage
Streaking volts of vermillion
And burning euphonium
Across the auburn sky

I was singing thunder
Nightbright and mountain-breaking
Connecting the dots
Like strings on contstellations

In a dozing blink I was drawn starward
To float between planets and atoms
A suspended soul in a universal body
My mind an infinity pattern

The galaxy spun around me
As I hurtled through time and space
The stars they shone their grace on me
And constellations took new form, and face

Animals running wildside 
Like a tumbling whirlwind
Angels in nimbus flight
Set on going home

But lightning struck and exiled me
And the thunder rocked my ears
I collapsed from heaven earthward
And crumbled into the sea
To stardust…

We are lightning...
