Found Sounds Beat for Electro Class

Davey James has created this recent body of work titled Delica performing an iPad with a small guerilla drum kit simultaneously. Recorded entirely live without loops or overdubs strictly using second-hand equipment, recycled sounds and green technology. James hinting at various eras and genres in his use of up-cycled music including; delta blues, footwork, juke, death metal, 60’s folk, ambient and 70's rock that present a fresh flavor of new. 

The Ontario native is an audiophile that just happens to be drummer. Over the years James has found the “drummer world” to darken and cast a shadow over the instrument and discovered to follow the road of traditional drumming would be castrating in distinguishing his voice. James is less interested in technique and more fascinated placing musical ideas in interactive motion. His sampledelic approach extracts, traps and repositions sounds from their original context, creating new work that illuminates his favorite-recorded music.  

These extracted sounds are used in form of quotation but divorced from there origin. These milliseconds of recycled music are presented in new linear movements, highlighting the core philosophical value James upholds in crafting music this way: Preserving the human soul in the digital revolution. The sonic result is entirely different when the repositioned samples are experienced, creating a new center of focus. The new experience becomes flesh morphed with machine moving together in unity, a technological civil rights movement. Delica is not electronic music, not acoustic music but "free feeling" soul music that presents honest and truthful moments. Recycled music filtered through a rhythmic human machine.

Davey James has performed on, produced and engineered hundreds of projects across North America. James started taking producing and engineering seriously after working for Rick Rubin in Los Angeles. James has worked with artists from major labels: Columbia, Wind Up, Warner Bros. and Capital records. He is an ethnomusicologist with a PhD that specializes in the sonic signature of multi-award winning Canadian music producer Daniel Lanois. He is also a laid back guy.

How many times do we find ourselves in the world of music searching or waiting for something new and different? With so much new material and so many different artists in the game, it is rare that something will have enough edge or clout as to stick around for more than just a couple of months before fizzling out, or being forgotten in our expansive iTunes libraries. And yet it is not the clout, edge, or Modern take on music that makes Nights and Weekends worth their weight in gold, but their seemingly and effortlessly timeless sound. There is a truly vintage vibe to this band and it does not at all feel contrived. Which can be so rare in a world with so many different groups trying to fit a mold or style as if trying to match the hip ness of the past or push the present into the future. 

This Group makes a big noise. And it doesn't come from a Quintet, or a four piece, but a trio to be reckoned with. Lead vocals come from sonically inclined Toronto native Brendan Beamish whose sound can easily take you back 50 yrs to the days of a soulful Motown rich Detroit. Accompanying him is feisty New Orleans Native Jermaine Hamilton, whose quick tongue and quicker wit weave story after story while all the while allowing you to bop your head and move your body in time to the music and still loose yourself. Which is easily done with the unrelenting driving beat and bass sounds of Drummer, multi instrumentalist and Texas Native Davey James, reminiscent of something you might hear from Johnny Cash or his Highwayman counterparts. 

Their live shows are impressive and always seem to leave you wanting more. Proving that when a band just has "that thing" it needn't be picked apart or overly discussed it simply just needs to be enjoyed. 

The new EP Old Creek Revival was entirely recorded at Canadian Recordings an Independently run studio by Davey James himself, who crafted, fully recorded and mixed this spot on eclectic 4-song collection. The band is quick to mention that no auto tune was used on this EP whatsoever, it was organically conceived and so for the sake of capturing the true vibe it is only fair it should follow suit in the recording process. It is so refreshing to listen to an EP, love it and become a fan, and then be propelled even further along with the love affair when you see said band live and realize they are the real deal in every way. And the EP is but a tool to capture a moment in this bands budding and hopefully lengthily mainstay in today's sometimes bloody and embattled music industry.


NAW - Takin' the Train

On Sundays, I like riding my Vespa in a red cape while reading ethnographic research on the 4-O-Fun and 427 freeways. I also can pilot tricycles up several inclines with unflagging speed, while cooking thirty-minute brownies in nineteen minutes. Canada is my nomadic home. Critics worldwide swoon over my original line of corduroy drums. I also enjoy hunting wild urban sonics in the Annex on Fridays in rush hour. I have been known to scale a few buildings and crush ice with my bare knees to capture audio. I also enjoy dinning at Luna in full mid-evil battle gear with my research advisor Lou. On Mondays, I tear down and rebuild the Bloor and Ossington subway station on my lunch break, making it more efficient in the area of heat retention and on tuesdays I practice urban hang gliding. On Humpday, I repair electrical appliances free of charge for disadvantaged families. Currently my Thursdays are open and practice taking naps. I even defended Sarnia, Ontario from a horde of ferocious army ants using only a hoe and a large glass of water. Once while on vacation in Kitchener, I successfully negotiated with a group of terrorist who had siezed a small bakery, quoting only Edgar Allan Poe. I own a small company in the Beaches that breeds prize-winning oysters, and on Saturdays the laws of physics do not apply to me.
