Marco Shuttle's third album, Cobalt Desert Oasis, features a varied collection of music recorded across a two year period. Often traveling to remote destinations, Marco would come back to Berlin with field recordings, images, and other inspirations to process in his studio and turn into sound.

The theme of the journey turns into a something more abstract than a travel diary, where environmental sounds blend in with modular synthesis, drum machines, effects and analog oscillators resulting in a cinematic listening experience where psychedelia, ritualism, and mysticism weave together in a sort of alien soundscape - that as the title of the album suggests, is reminiscent of a parallel utopian world.

The album is rich in complex rhythmics, and more than in any of his previous work, has strong acoustic elements. Amongst other percussion instruments, Marco used the Tombak, a traditional Persian hand drum capable of reaching a very wide range of frequencies - from deep round subby toms, to high pitched sharp rimshots, throughout the record.

Marco Shuttle is certainly not new to these sort of elements, but in Cobalt Desert Oasis he brings the environmental element of his sound into the forefront in a way that takes the listener into a hazy expanse where it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the machine elements from the natural - and where the music almost becomes a visual experience, which relates to Marco's own photography used throughout the cover and insert images.

HTRK – Body Lotion

Body Lotion is a collaboration between Belgium's Sleeperhold Publications, Australian duo HTRK and London-based artist David Ferrando Giraut. The three tracks on the record—"Sugar," "Punch" and the title track, "Body Lotion"—date back to the sessions that led to the band's 2011 album, Work (Work Work). For any HTRK fan, the opportunity to hear three unheard Work (Work Work)-era tracks is reason for both celebration and reflection. Two of the songs feature the unmistakable basslines of Sean Stewart, who died in 2010, before Work (Work Work) was released. 

Both "Sugar" and "Punch" were recorded live in HTRK's London rehearsal room, the then trio of Jonnine Standish, Nigel Lee-Yang and Sean Stewart. On "Sugar," Jonnine's voice smolders through smeared drums and Sean's bassline. "Punch" is spare and confessionary; "Body Lotion" is suggestive, winking and bruised, a trademark HTRK hook submerged beneath the murk. All three tracks mutated from the recording sessions that ultimately led to Work (Work Work) track "Slo Glo." While they all stand as striking individual songs, they share subtle elements in common—a lyrical idea here, some guitar parts there. 

David Ferrando Giraut's distinctive artwork adorns Body Lotion's sleeve and one side of the wax. (All three tracks feature on the record's A-side.) The Spanish artist has a deep and intimate connection to HTRK—he was living with Nigel in London at a time when Sean would visit to sketch out songs in Nigel's tiny room. They've collaborated before, too: Jonnine has narrated and appeared in some of his films, while Nigel has provided the music. Giraut's previous installations have often carried a musical lean—he's used LP covers and turntables in the past—and he's found a rich stream of creative inspiration in music's ability to create meaning and change in memory and behaviour.

This year has seen HTRK return with Psychic 9-5 Club, a bold and triumphant album, one that marked the beginning of a new era for Nigel and Jonnine. Body Lotion presents a beautiful, bittersweet glimpse into the recent past. 

About Sleeperhold Publications:

Sleeperhold is a Belgian-based publication platform. It's aim: to produce ten outputs, spanning different realms of the arts, and then cease to exist. Its current project is a run of ten vinyl records—HTRK's 12-inch follow previous efforts from Tropic Of Cancer, Moon Duo and Disappears. Before the vinyl series, Sleeperhold put out a photobook, a poster set, a deck of cards and short stories. They say: "There is no recurring theme, there is no recurring format, there is no recurring audience."

Experimental electronic fusion at 110 BPM. Built this one around a driving bassline with 4/4 marching percussion and a fake dulcimer for texture. The chorus goes full cinematic with brass that hits like a Hans Zimmer score.

Made in Reason 12. Think Command & Conquer meets sci-fi soundtrack - could totally see this in a strategy game.

The Uni series began when Alva Noto was booked to play live at the club UNIT in Tokyo, and had to adapt his sound accordingly for that environment.

‘UNIEQAV’ follows-on from and develops the concept of Alva Noto’s ‘Unitxt’ and ‘Univrs’ albums, and completes the third part in the trilogy, whereby each record is both unique and part of the bigger picture. This is also mirrored in the artwork for each release, which when combined form a triptych spelling ‘Uni’.

Described by Carsten as “sonically representing an underwater dive”, the gleaming ‘UNIEQAV’ brings as usual an inherent artistic, conceptual and scientific depth. Mathematics, data, unit systems, grids, rhythms, codes, text, language, spoken word, DNA, science technology and nature are all utilised, for both inspiration and execution.  

As with the last two Uni releases, the French sound poet Anne-James Chaton collaborates here, on ‘Uni Dna’. Where on previous records Chaton first provided a vocal track to which Nicolai composed, this time the duo flipped it; the poet wrote for an existing track, adding his unique vocal approach to recite amino acids that constitute the DNA molecule.

Regarding Carsten’s interest in 3D sound design and building sonic spaces, ‘UNIEQAV’ transports the listener to a modern, spacious and zen-like place for meditative movement. But conversely the album works equally well in a dark club - as for every glistening digital spark and simple, emotive melody - there’s a stealthy bassline, frenetic drum pattern and colossal low-end thump.
