Thanks to the lockdown and the lack of proper work on these past 2 months I decided to (finally) open and old box of DAT I got from my storage place in Argentina when I was forced to close it and decide what to keep (bring it home on the plane), what to sell, what to discard.
These DAT (my go-to recording/archival media in the 90s)  included loads of tapes with Jams and impromptu encounters that I recorded there live and never ever listened to.
I realize now how good that attitude was,( just tape everything that happens at home or archival purposes), I did that all the time, stopped later, I promise to do it again in the future.

I discovered many gems, funny and intense moments, I include here one rehearsal for a song I composed in 1985 (one of my first proper composition) . I make a little bass solo that's pretty lame, but my partners live-at-home performance is awesome and I'm glad to make this available for you to listen and criticize.

This happened in Buenos Aires, March 9th 1995 at my home/studio in the Julian Alvarez street of the Palermo Viejo area. Recorded live to DAT (one mic for the guitar, one for the bass, a stereo AT mic for the percussion set.

Disquiet Junto Project 0468: Mirror Rorrim. The Assignment: Create a new persona for yourself, and record a duet together.

Andreas likes software, ambient pads and (mostly) avoids repetition – and he has recently tried out "Quadrivium" by Giorgio Sancristoforo. Saerdna likes hardware, beats and repetition and tries to do rhythms with noises recorded out of the "Soma Ether" by Vlad Kreimer.

I found 2 unused sample recordings by these guys and helped them to put them together (admittedly: overhasty for the "Remainder Duet". (Irrelevant fun fact: The loop in Reaper runs with a bpm of 100.695…)

In one scene of this old war movie, the man is saying goodbye to go to another well-founded, short and successful war, and his wife is deeply worried.

The bells call to battle, the wife struggles to find parting words, and even the worn-out VHS tape is deeply moved.

Hace unos dias fuimos a Ritme mi amigo Sexto y yo decididos a ambientar la tarde antes de un concierto, quedamos en poner un rollete mínimal/breaks/ambient a bajo BPM con algunas perlas acidas y nuestro entusiasmo en dias precedentes nos condujo a llevar la grabadora para hacer un Recording para la posteridad, como Sexto bebe el doble que yo y llevaba la mitad de los temas mas guapos que los míos tuve la suerte que la grabadora no funciono, su culpa claramente, así que me he cogido la licencia de grabar en casa el set en base a las canciones que llevaba. Es una gozada poder poner algo asi en un sitio como Ritme, la gente se movía de cintura para arriba mientras se tomaba unas cervezas, nos trataron de 10. Volveremos.

Topic and Guest: As we have explored in previous programs, in fact, as we have attempted to unpack in every program, Black internationalism is an intentional disruption, a radical intervention in the global terms of order.  

In order to understand Black internationalism as a critical disruption, a radical intervention, we must unpack it. The concept, international, as understood in dominant discourse [as opposed to discourse on the periphery, discourses from below], is related to the creation and forced imposition of the nation-state, birthed from a European historiography/historicity as the dominant mechanism that organizes human life. The imposition of mechanisms, such as colonialism and chattel slavery, for instance, rooted in a specific epistemology was necessary to structure institutions and ways of knowing that [re]conceptualized what it means to be human as the justification for and maintenance of the idea private property. Being so, international indicates a relationship at various levels of communities of people across [artificial] boundaries. 

It is from here, Black international/ism, then, is understood as a radical disruption of these systems and institutions. What must not be lost in this praxis, is the fact that this radical disruption is simultaneously a clear articulation and theorization of Black Power. 

Cedric Robinson asserts that “if we are to survive, we must take nothing which is dead and choose wisely among the dying” [Black Sansculottes and Ambitious Marionettes: Cedric J. Robinson, C.L.R. James and the Critique of Political Leadership; Cedric J. Robinson, Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition [1983]), 316].

This assertion is certainly true on many levels but requires a simultaneously developed alternative foundation to build upon, as the wise choices must be planted into something. 

Today, we explore the ideas and argument in, Pauulu’s Diaspora: Black Internationalism and Environmental Justice as presented by Quito Swan.

Properly situated, we can see Pauulu's Diaspora: Black Internationalism and Environmental Justice presents a framework for that alternative. The possibilities of inventing the future.

Pauulu’s Diaspora is a mapping of Black internationalism across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Ocean worlds, through the life and work of twentieth-century radical Pauulu Kamarakafego. 

In this work, Dr. Quito Swan is disrupting and challenging limited conceptualizations and understandings of Black Power by situating it, properly, in an international context. Dr. Swan offers us a map on how Pauulu was following in the long tradition of those who came before. A genealogy of Black internationalism’s praxis of resistance.  

Quito Swan is Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston, where he directs the William Monroe Trotter Institute for the Study of Black Culture. He is a historian of Black internationalism, global Black Power and the Black Pacific. Dr. Swan is the author of many articles as well as, The Struggle for Decolonization: Black Power in Bermuda.
