Zwölf kalte, dünne Schläge der Turmuhr
wecken mich.
Kein Klang, keine Wärme in ihnen
bergen und decken mich.

Bellende böse Hunde um Mitternacht
schrecken mich.

Armseliges Geläute
trennt ein armes Gestern
vom armen Heute.
Ob ein Tag sich zum andern wende,
der nichts Neues, nichts Besseres fände,
als daß er in Kurzem wie dieser ende, -
was kann mir's bedeuten?

Ich will die Wende der Zeiten sehen,
wenn leuchtende Zeichen am Nachthimmel stehen,
