Alfresco Disco 'Most Wanted' 2018 DJ Mix (Download)

Our first mix of 2019 comes from Stockholm native and true groove expert Bäcksvart ("pitch black" in English). Active now for a couple of years he plays and releases house and techno for all scenes and seasons of the Swedish capital. He is one of the residents of the infamous NEU concept at Berns and his catalogue includes releases on labels such as Brobot(US), Plettro (IT), Ennert (IT) and of course also the own Seaweed imprint that he runs with some friends. As if this wasn't enough he's also part behind the techno trio Patagonia alongside Mathias Hinds and Simon Kiisk, and with a whole bunch of releases in store we can for surely say that 2019 will be an interesting year for mr Bäcksvart. 

His sound is just like his personality – a mix between the hectic city life and the calmness of the baltic shores. When not found in the studio Bäcksvart is out on the water looking for big fish as one of Swedens most well known fishing guides. Just like the lakes this is a really deep and captivating mix. His own words about the contribution:

"I wanted to do something "chill" with a spiritual vibe for the new year. Its a pick of some fav deep rollers and 3 of my old tracks and one new unreleased, hope u like it!"

Well known and highly regarded within White Isle house circles Richy has held down a stellar residency for Paradise at DC-10, for a number of years now… however, his musical influences reach beyond the broad church of house, branching into disco, funk, boogie, world and hip-hop. It’s this extended material palette that Richy calls upon for his contribution to our mix series, and with fantastic results. Even the most severe January blues will be dealt a blow here…

DEEP DOWN LOW Vol. 2

Last of my aye heavy mix series, finally completed this after a while of putting it off and chopping and changing the selected tracks. Inspiration for this came from recent things such as going to Dekmantel 2018, seeing great acts such as Glasgow's finest Optimo, Palms Trax, Denis Sulta, Jasper James, Marcellus Pittman in Glasgow and tracks I've been luckily enough to be able be able to play live for the first time in Buff Club with the All U Need boys, Nice N Sleazy and a monthly Residence in a small bar called Soulsa. Hopefully yees enjoy it and it will round off this series for me to start something new.

Aye Heavy: Volume #3

German house hero Kevin Over’s mission with DJing and producing runs somewhat deeper than most. The things that made club culture so vital in the first place — the breaking down of social barriers, the experience of coming together through music, the creation of unique spaces away from the norms of day-to-day society — form the very heart of what he does. 

Alongside releases on Kerri Chandler’s Madhouse Records, Gerd’s 4lux, Truesoul, Get Physical, and other A-grade imprints, he continues to study for a degree in sociology. It’s this other side of his life that forms the crux of his interests in dance music. “Taking part in and actually being responsible in building up certain societies which have their own morals and which develop their own behavior and character makes every club night special to me” he says. In age when people are coming to dance music through commercial channels with no grounding in the culture or history of the context in which it blossomed and evolved, it’s refreshing to hear such salient words from an artist in their mid-20s.

Whether he’s making raw, jacking house grooves, deeper, soul-drenched stuff or Detroit-flavoured workouts, his music is always muscular, intriguing and captivating. House music is his palette, but there’s myriad colours within it. “Musically, I like to see myself in an infinite swirl of musical progression and development. My aim is to never stick in any field, but getting in there, switching positions, and reproducing these experiences and feelings through my own sound... avoiding repetition while keeping my own character and expression.” He realises this ethos through an incredibly crisp, punchy, sophisticated production quality.

His DJ sets switch gears through different levels of house, techno and disco, from the roots of the music to his own freshly-cooked studio productions. He has played across the world from Australia and New Zealand to Argentina, London, Stockholm, Barcelona, Brussels, Dublin and Berlin. He relishes the challenges and benefits that come with playing at different times of night — whether that’s warming up, playing peak time or the closing set. “I love to play all kinds of different locations to create different atmospheres. The magic of the impossibility of the replicability of every night fascinates me. Every night needs a different key and taking the risk to find the right one instead of just brutally barging the doors down... that’s what keeps it exciting. The unexpected and unplanned possibilities and spontaneity of a night are what excite me as a DJ.”

I feel so lucky to have been able to ring in the morning light of 2019 in Brooklyn's finest House of Yes alongside the Bubbles and Bass crew. You were far and away one of the best crowds I've ever had and I will remember this set for a long time.
