This song was inspired by two things (in order): 

1. A period of time in which I was actively longing to make melodies, music, and beautiful sounds that expressed what I was feeling inside. The feelings I had - primarily of worship and adoration of Jesus Christ - were so powerful that I was compelled to create. I was blown away by His grace, and equally astounded at my depravity without Him. My stark need for Him is probably the most influential feeling/emotion/reality that takes musical form on this song. 

2. A story within "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass," about slaves on plantations in the south singing songs. They would often walk throughout the forest, particularly when they had accomplished something insignificant or made a minor improvement in horrific conditions, singing spontaneous songs of joy and sadness. Their songs were often without words, and if they had words, they were without coherence. To these sad but beautiful songs Douglass traced what he described as his "first glimmering conception of the dehumanizing character of slavery." This song - whether initially intended to or not - captures that ironic beauty found in sorrow.

A Glimmering Conception

The really, really short-version description I give people for this song is that it's a song from God. Jesus singing to me. It's about suffering. It's about the compassion of God, His goodness, and how much He loves us as a father. It also deals with the biblical reality that Christ has experienced everything we have, and He can sympathize with us honestly. I wrote it (or, rather, it wrote itself) during a really painful time in my life. And it touches on the powerful truth that ultimately, God has done everything necessary for relationship with us, and we are free to just be His. It's all He ever wanted anyway.

Story behind "Open Heaven" 
1. I want heaven to come to earth. This is possible. Jesus prayed the will of God in the Lord's Prayer for "[God's] kingdom come, [God's] will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." The will of God is for all that heaven is to become real here on earth. It is happening!

2. There were several key instances in the bible where people saw into heaven. When Jesus was baptized by his cousin, he came up out of the water and saw the heavens opened, and the spirit of God came down. (And guess what..the heavens never closed!) Another time, Peter saw the heavens opened in a vision. In Revelation, John sees the heavens opened multiple times.

3. Which brings me to the main story behind this song. Revelation 4: John sees heaven opened, and God says "come up here". Did you know that's God's call for you and me today? Ephesians 2 says we have been raised up with Christ and seated with Him in heavenly places. Hebrews 4 IMPLORES us to approach the throne of God by faith. We, as sons and daughters of God, have full access to the throne room! When Jesus died and rose, the veil separating us from God was torn; and now, as we are covered by His blood, he calls us to himself!

4. Revelation 19:

"I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: 
KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS."
