We've got some exciting talent lined up for the series, but let's introduce our first artist to feature on TapeTracks. 

Alexander Lewis is a musician/producer based in New York in the U.S. His music is a fusion of different styles including a strong jazz influence (his musical background)and future hip hop and bass music. We've been keeping a close eye on his progress over the last few months and now we're excited to bring you 'Seasons'. The first TapeTrack in our fortnightly series.

Today was an interesting day.  I woke up thinking I had "Before It's All Over" pretty much ready to go, just needed to source one vocal sample that I dreamt about while the rough track played over and over in the headphones I was wearing when I fell asleep during production.  

I'm not saying my lifestyle is healthy, but it is what it is.  

Anyway, this track is now being posted around 7:30pm (my time) rather than first thing in the morning, like I thought could be possible.  And somehow, the song has managed to gain two additional minutes from where I thought it was ready to go, but for one sample.  

And I couldn't find the sample I wanted.  (Not true--I found it, I just couldn't snag it.)  

So, all of the spoken word you hear in this song, I came up with today--and trying to structure around this in a way that made it feel like a song instead of just some cool bits and pieces is what stretched the song out.  

I think it works better than what I had.  It certainly has better structure--but, by spreading things out, the track also gained a melancholy vibe--odd, for what is, ostensibly a funky house track (or a housey funk track, if you'd prefer.)  

...and, that melancholy vibe certainly fits the title and lyrics, even if the upbeat funk stuff really doesn't.  I could explain this away, that the energy is the turbulence of facing the end of something...but that would be a contrivance.  (A good one, but still...)  

So this track has some disco strings, some funk horns, all sorts of drums, singing, speaking, synths, two different basses--one a funky bass guitar, the other the famous Korg M1 organ played on its lowest notes.  I think the arrangement is kind of cool--and not typically Interbay (except for the length and the twists and turns I force the song into--I mean, why does the "Think" break get dropped in this?  Only I know...and I'm not sure I do.  

(...because one particular drum section reminded me of that break, so I thought I'd try to incorporate that somehow.  I think...)  

Now, it is up to you to decide.  Is this song about the end of relationship?  It certainly seems that way.  Or, does the thumbnail hint at a different meaning?  One a bit darker than even the end of a relationship?  Could be.  Again, I will leave it up to you to decide.  As far as the thumbnail goes, perhaps communism really was just a red herring.
