Clasped To The Pig

This is a song my mother, Mary McCarthy, used to sing, she liked it a lot. It’s a song about a dead mother and child, it’s a serious song. I learned very recently it was written by Deirdre Scanlan who recorded it on a CD called 'Speak Softly' in 1999.  Deirdre said she used to sing it regularly in the singer's club in Banagher and Birr.  I reckon my Uncle John (McCarthy) would have heard it there then taught it to my mother. Herself And Myself (preview)

Thomas McCarthy is a last bastion of the oral tradition, an Irish traveller who comes from a long line of singers and musicians, from who he learned many fine and previously unknown versions of traditional songs. 
 
He has an unforgettable voice and his performance has been described as “outstanding”, “a rare delight” and “profoundly moving”.
 
Thomas has held audiences spellbound at many folk festivals including Whitby and Sidmouth. He has released one CD “Round Top Wagon” and his second album “Herself and Myself” is due out in September and is dedicated to his mother, Mary McCarthy, a fine singer who died nearly four years ago.
