Thank you Mariusz for a very interesting and thought-provoking lecture. You acknowledge that by allowing for new species, you are departing from the ideas of Aquinas himself. I am wondering if you also expect to expand upon his thinking in the following areas: 1. Would the eduction of a new substantial form, and thus a new species, take place for a single individual or simultaneously in many instances for a larger population? In the case of human beings, this question raises the old issue of monogenism and polygenism. 2. Would the divine introduction of the human soul necessarily take place at the point of conception? I believe Aquinas allowed for a succession of vegetative, animal, and rational souls. 3. By having a new substantial form educed at the point of conception, I believe you avoid the problem which has sometimes been raised about one substantial form replacing another; this problem would seem to arise only if the transition took place in adult organisms.

About the speaker:
Fr. Gregory Pine, O.P. serves presently as Assistant Director of Campus Outreach for the Thomistic Institute. He served previously as an associate pastor at St. Louis Bertrand Church in Louisville, KY where he also taught as an adjunct professor at Bellarmine University. Born and raised near Philadelphia, PA, he attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville, studying mathematics and humanities. Upon graduating, he entered the Order of Preachers in 2010. He was ordained a priest in 2016 and holds an STL from the Dominican House of Studies.

About the speaker: Professor Raymond Hain is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Providence College and Associate Director of the Providence College Humanities Program. He received his BA in Philosophy from Christendom College and his MA and PhD in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, where he studied under Ralph McInerny and David Solomon. He works primarily in moral philosophy in the Thomistic tradition, as well as topics in applied ethics (especially bioethics and the ethics of architecture) and connections between philosophy and literature. As part of the Humanities Program, he directs the Providence College Humanities Forum and the Providence College Humanities Reading Seminars.

Fr. Mariusz Tabaczek, O.P., is a Polish Dominican theologian. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophical theology from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA and Church Licentiate from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. He currently works as a professor of theology at the Angelicum in Rome, and as a researcher for the Angelicum Thomistic Institute.

Robert C. (“Rob”) Koons is a professor of philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught for 33 years. M. A. Oxford, Ph.D. UCLA. He is the author or co-author of four books, including: Realism Regained (Oxford University Press, 2000), and The Atlas of Reality: A Comprehensive Guide to Metaphysics, with Timothy H. Pickavance (Wiley-Blackwell, 2017). He is the co-editor (with George Bealer) of The Waning of Materialism (Oxford University Press, 2010), and co-editor (with Nicholas Teh and William Simpson) of Neo-Aristotelian Perspectives on Contemporary Science (Routledge, 2018). He has been working recently on an Aristotelian interpretation of quantum theory, on defending and articulating Thomism in contemporary terms, and on arguments for classical theism.
