Watch the water, yet follow no wave.
Beneath the tree, one sits like a mountain,
the heart still as a quiet lake.

Let the wind pass, let the waters rise.
Between heaven and earth—
the wind is but the outer form,
stillness is the true heart.

聽風，不逐風。
觀水，不逐波。
樹下，有人端坐如山，
心如止水。

任風過，任水起。
天地之間——
風是外相，

In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars”, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet encapsulates the totality of a seven-year love affair: its origin in overwhelming connection, its persistence through emotional deprivation and societal deception, and its final disintegration under the accumulated strain of social entanglements and personal trauma. The poem follows the arc from ecstasy to breakdown, reflecting on how something exalted and rare was warped by circumstances that neither lover could overcome. The language shifts from cosmic metaphor (lightning flash, quasar’s fire) to raw interpersonal consequence (dagger, lunacy, poison), capturing both the mythic intensity of the relationship and the mortal, damaging toll it exacted.

A lightning flash entwined our separate souls,
Still trapped by ties unbreakable, professed.  
To oaks, we pledged we’d let young saplings grow,
Before our hidden love could be confessed.

Each year, the strain of lies and stealth increased,
And warped and wounded both in different ways.
Our love—a quasar’s fire—never ceased,
But battled with the venom of our days.

Too long apart, too scarce the time we shared;  
Each word turned sharpened dagger, misconstrued.  
We battled wounds and lives left torn and bared,  
Our treasured hearts, in lunacy, we slew.

Our union glimmered in its splendored dawn,
But heaven fathers hell in poison spawned.
