After years spent in dinghy warehouses and clubs, Ben Sleia’s got a raver’s sensibility and an intuitive touch of what it takes to make a crowd feel. Following regular sets at Liverpool institution 24 Kitchen Street, as well as residencies on community radio stations Melodic Distraction Radio and Refuge
Worldwide in Berlin with her show Bruits, she caught the eye of curators at FOLD, Daisychain, Lobster Theremin, and contributed mixes to all series. She regularly plays in the UK and in Berlin, where she is based, showcasing a sound on the tastefully harsh left side, with a bent for the UK-centric: techno, electro, breaks, dubstep, hardcore, and jungle.

Not only is this the first post for Research & Development of 2024, it is our very first live set to be published as part of the mix series!  

Los Angeles-born Ole Mic Odd (aka Michael Padgett) grew up surrounded by jazz and rap music before moving to the east coast and becoming obsessed with vinyl. After DJing at parties and bars for years – spinning everything from dub/reggae and funk to krautrock and minimal wave – he finally discovered techno and picked up a few drum machines. 

Influenced by cult Dutch electronic labels, Detroit electro, Miami bass, early Chicago and P-Funk/G-Funk, Michael's music and performances are driven by hardware electronics, live recordings and improvisation. His high-energy live sets weave together techno, acid, electro, house, synth-wave and jakbeat styles, while his recordings range from acid electro and jackin techno to stomping house and ambient synth improvisations.

Michael has released on Kraftjerkz, Source Material, Zement, Dead Channel, Natural Sciences, New York Haunted, Another Perspective, Hilltown Disco, Clan Destine and Up North Records, among others. He has releases forthcoming on KRI Records, Zonate and Jungle Gym Records.

What is cybertech?

Cybertech is differentiated from it's closest cousins, electro and techno, by eschewing a nostalgia fetish and lack of innovation often predominating contemporary genres.

As those genres grow ever increasingly homogenised, derivative and weak cybertech has become more laser focused in a direction towards a new sonic vision.

Having it's genesis in the mid 2010s with pioneers such as DJ Stingray and Galaxian.  It relates closely with elements of vivid sound design, unusual rhythmic patterns, innovative sounds, using 21st century techniques & tools.

It's mood will often be one of tough, technotic patterns, metallic percussion, interspersed with otherworldly soundscapes, intricate effects, hyper-dynamic song structure.

As drum & bass and dubstep consumed themselves, eventually birthing new hybrid "post" genres, cybertech sets it sights on expanding as a genre, spirit and ethos for the "post" electro & techno age.
