I became curious about the arrangement development and transition process that different artist use during the course of a song.  The main question I was dealing with was what are the subtle things a composer does to keep the song interesting throughout the entire song arrangement? 

Human Beings like repetition but not duplication.  What I mean is that we like to grab hold of a catchy melody or rhythm and desire coming back to it a couple of times throughout a song. However, we notice when it’s an exact copy of something we have heard earlier in the song (we are very smart creatures).  I have been guilty of copying an earlier verse or chorus and plopping it note for note down later in the song…DON”T DO THIS.   It is important to add something new, different and exciting as the song progresses.   Give the listener something new every step of the way.   During this song I learned from other artists who are very good at this and tried to emulate some of their techniques.      

I continued my study of sampling during this latest musical project.  What better genre than Electronic Dance Music (EDM) to showcase the technology.  This song is called “Be All You” which rolled off the tongue so easy and blended so well with my particular groove established early on in the song.  As is typical with EDM you will hear plenty of tension building synthesizer magic teamed up with EDM traditional “four to the floor” kicks.  This partnership often ending in pregnant pauses or nail biting drum fills foreshadowing what is famously known in EDM as the “Drop” where all that tension explodes into an epic Chorus eruption.    

I used software known as Kontakt for the sampling.  There is a lot under the “hood” here and I have much to learn.  I used my own voice as the experimental fodder and basically split it up into slices and mapped them to my keyboard keys.  Then, via special algorithms in the software, essentially “time stretched” my voice to my songs own tempo.   This process maintained the rhythmic integrity to my voice slices despite the pitch changes (remember; typically if you bring something up in frequency it wants to play faster .....the chipmunk voice effect….I did not want that).   You can hear examples of this “vocoder” like effect sprinkled throughout the song.  What fun.  

SO who cares about all this technical crap anyway.  They key is that the song has to hold up on its own and actually be GOOD.  I believe I have achieved that as I noticed I want to dance when I listen to it. My BLOG:

How is it Going;   This song, "Ground Zero",  is the final song on my new album "Perfect Storm" released in Apr 18.  This whole package was created in a little over one years time and I enjoyed every step of the process along the way.   This particular song was arranged after I listened very carefully to music I currently like already out there in the world.  As I listened, I methodically picked apart the structure of some of my favorites (deep listening).   I then, very carefully, focused on some of the sound tones and effects I liked in certain songs selected.  I  attempted to emulate and construct some of the sounds via synth design techniques and a little bit of sampling.  I could go into a lot more detail but I will not bore you.  Again, the most important thing is the "song" itself; melodies, lyrics  and rhythms.   Enjoy the music friends and thank you for listening.

BLOG:
The image above provides a visual representation of my song's structure.  The bright green strip across the middle of the image above is a very cool sounding synth pattern that travels the length of the song.  You can clearly hear its mesmerizing tones in the intro to the song.   This pattern became its backbone with the drum/bass, in red, a prominent second supporting structure.  The pattern never stops except for one small break in the middle. A sequence that does not change throughout the entirety of a song is dangerous but a challenge I love to work with.   
 
            I was able to accomplish this by slowly building the tension as the song progressed, adding various instruments  to dance with the backbone and various "sweetener" effects in yellow  to add dissonance and further play with the tension.  I especially like the addition of the guitar (in pink) to the chorus which used an amp pre-set called "Cheap Combo" that just worked for me. My vocals are shown in blue and mostly organically formed out of the rhythms and mood I was feeling emanating from the main chord structure and rhythms.   This song has a darkish atmosphere and a fair amount of edginess.   My vocals have more delay than usual because that's just what I was feeling when I wrote the lyrics.  
 
            I love to look back at my project after all the pain and joy of creation is over.  The image you see above is an end state and I promise you that the formation state was much uglier, full of wrong turns and plenty of dead ends.  The song you hear was cultivated out of the murky soup of my mind and all the particular content blowing through my skull at that particular moment.   With every turn I also make new musical discoveries that bring sparkle to the process and a never ending sense of wonder and delight to me.  Some of the names of my sweetener sounds make me chuckle; "Echo's ill factor", "Demon Choir" , "Ash Decay" and "Squawk Box" and I'll leave it to you to pick them out of the song as you listen to it. 

             This song was called "Sirens" as that is a frequent repeated phrase in the chorus.  However, I have discovered that about a million other artist also have a song named "Sirens"  Therefore, as of this very second of writing,  I have decided to rename the song "Fifty Three Degrees" just because I feel like it.  How is that for creative license.

I am back with a new musical offering.  This song is called Echo Chamber.  It is edgy and unique.

This song speaks for itself and conveys what I feel at this particular moment in history.
