The nature sounds you will hear were recorded on the outskirts of our town. When recording them I was blown away by the number of birds creating the noisy community I found myself in. It really was like a sound bath of bird calls. I realised after listening to the recording that I was very much just a visitor on my own block of land. It was very disconcerting to realise how LOUD my footsteps were as I picked my way through the undergrowth.

The constant in the whole recording is the ocean forever in the background to some degree at this time of the year.

As you listen to the bird calls notice how many there are; how they overlap, stand alone or blend. 

Do they appear to interrupt, are they singing a continuous song or do they seem to be away in the distance participating in another conversation.

Look at the image and notice the spike in the recording. Midway through the recording  you will hear the calls of transient noise makers interrupting the balance in the community; the call of the common motorbike, the high pitched beeps of the backing truck and the whirring sound of the potentially invasive drone. 

As the recording returns to the bird banter close your eyes and notice how it takes a moment for you to tune back in. 

Enjoy the sound experience and as you leave, consider your own impact on the environment whether at home, camping or taking a walk,  and ask yourself...
"Am I the loudest local?"
"Am I the biggest broadcaster?"

This recording was created as part of the Flowers & Feathers Soundscape Project for the Esperance Wildflower Festival 2020. Community members were introduced to outdoor sound recording and combined these with the theme "Flowers and Feathers: Friends or Foes?" -- a celebration of local plant and bird species and the important relationships between them.
