Outsiders mix for ~surf~

While working a job that required frequent drives between Philadelphia and a remote warehouse to sort furniture, Brendan Principato, the artist behind the project Saapato, noticed a fox on the side of the highway that had been struck dead by a car. Its vibrant red coat stood out against the asphalt. Day after day, the fox remained there, gradually transitioning from serene lifelessness to an unrecognizable state, a haunting reminder of nature’s cyclical processes.

This encounter sparked a year-long exploration of decomposition—not merely as a biological process but as a metaphor for transformation, interconnectedness, and renewal. The result is Saapato’s forthcoming album, a deeply conceptual project inspired by the five stages of decomposition: fresh, bloat, active decay, advanced decay, and dry/remains. In researching decomposition, Principato learned about the intricate network of factors that drive it: animals, bacteria, fungi, temperature, moisture, and time. Recognizing the inherently interwoven nature of these forces, he chose to mirror this interplay in the music. What began as a series of foundational “skeleton tracks” that Principato produced quickly evolved into a collective endeavor, with a wide array of guest musicians and sound artists contributing additional processing and instrumental textures to Principato's source material. These collaborators act as symbolic “decomposers,” breaking down and reshaping the sonic landscape to create an altered final form of the music found across the album. 

The album features contributions from an extraordinary roster of artists, including Laraaji, Shuta Yasukochi, Loris S. Sarid, James Bernard & marine eyes, KMRU, Diatom Deli, Haruhisa Tanaka, Ki Oni, Green-House, Golden Brown, Early Fern, Gregg Kowalski, Kallie Lampel, Ben Seretan, Patricia Wolf, and Nailah Hunter. Each artist adds their own unique perspective, resulting in an evolving, organic soundscape that captures the delicate balance of creation and decay.

The result is not only a sonic journey but also a philosophical meditation on the interconnectedness of life, death, and renewal. In the process of decomposition, nothing truly disappears—everything transforms, sustains other life, and/or persists in some form. This ethos permeates each moment of the album, inviting listeners to reflect on the beauty of impermanence and the cycles that shape all living things.

À peine sortis nous ne pouvons nous empêcher de nous demander si cette grande gigue n'était pas une nécessité ?

Machicoulis, the debut album from f pneumonia, takes us on a stroll through the fertile lands of digital-naturalistic music with a strong dub flavour. A first album with a definite sense of humour that makes you want to keep walking.

An influential bard travels to Strasbourg along the hiking trails of the Vosges. It's the year 1518 and down below the city's inhabitants are going wild in a dancing mania, the origin of which no one knows.

After considerable loss of life, daily life came to a standstill, commercial comings and goings were abandoned in favour of scenes of jubilation for those who had managed to brave the marathon enchantment of this diabolical dance. As soon as we stepped out, we couldn't help but wonder if this great jig wasn't a necessity?

Outsiders: Teenage Menopause w/ Zoe Heselton @ Kiosk Radio 17.03.2025

A synapse-popping electro-acoustic soundwalk around Western Europe's cathedrals, chapels and churches, 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒔 skews recognizable sacred soundscapes, proposing a contemporary mythology that muddles the past, present and future. Following on from his critically-acclaimed 𝑩𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑩𝒍𝒖𝒆𝒔 full-length, American sound artist Jake Muir familiarizes himself with German and British sonic architecture by studying some of the medieval shadows that still hang over Europe's streets, even as they continue to evolve. Manipulating environmental recordings captured in Germany and England, Muir presents an impressionistic juxtaposition of parallel cultures: the UK's distinctive "change ringing" technique, where a team of bell-ringers play long varied sequences on a set of tuned bells; and Germany's more sober style, with monotonous peals that add rhythm to daily life.

When Muir moved from Los Angeles to Berlin back in 2019, it wasn't just the German capital's damp weather and long, dark winters that came as a surprise. He was immediately struck by the city's anomalous acoustics, and one particular element stood out: the resonant church bells that echo around Berlin throughout the day to mark time, and for 10 minutes on Sundays as a call for mass. Gathering his field recording equipment, Muir acquainted himself with his new home by following the sonorous clangs, wandering from kiez to kiez to capture each church's distinct auditory flavor. And the more material he collected, the more engrossed he became in the history of bell ringing, prompting a deep dive that would shuttle him across Germany and into Italy, Belgium and the UK.

On 𝑪𝒂𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝑺𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒏𝒔, Muir trains his focus on Berlin, where his journey began, and on England, where he encountered the most elaborate bell ringing practice. 𝘌𝘳𝘻𝘬𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 is a hypnotic lattice of sounds recorded all over the German capital: at Parochialkirche, a reformed church in Mitte; at evangelical church St. Matthäus, at Sophienkirche, another Mitte landmark; and at St. Mathias, a Roman Catholic church just in front of the Potsdam Gate. By fusing the liturgical chimes with snippets of local ambiance - traffic, chattering tourists and birdsong, for example -  Muir takes a blurry snapshot of the city, queering its idiosyncratic color spectrum with his various digital processes. Using reverb to replicate the acoustic properties of both the streets and the church interiors, he subtly disturbs the timeline, stretching out brief peals into long, mesmerizing drones and turning garbled voices into ghostly babble.

The environment alters considerably on 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘴; Muir uses the same technique and applies it to recordings made at the 1000-year-old St. Oswald church in Oswestry, St. Bartholomew's, Edgbaston and Holy Trinity in Stratford-Upon-Avon, home to Shakespeare’s final resting place. Here, Muir methodically untangles the change-ringing process, linking back to 𝘌𝘳𝘻𝘬𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘨 with a single bell tone before moving inside the church itself and documenting the ringers' shouted instructions, blending the calls with the bells' mathematical cyclic patterns. Muir memorializes what in 2025 is a dying art-form - a community skill that's disappearing worryingly quickly as young Brits lose interest in the church and its rituals. Unsettling distortions bite into the undulating sequences and underneath the noise, Muir highlights the music's latent euphoria, drawing out its most celestial tonalities.

First of all, I’d like to thank you for the opportunity — I really like you all.
I’m Sandro, I’m a painter and I occasionally DJ as well. I’m part of the Tundra collective and I’ve recently started making music — and that’s thanks to you, as Living Room influenced me a lot. Thank you for that!

q. is there a story behind the mix?
a. I’m not sure, but it definitely gives me a lot of chills.

q. what’s the best way to enjoy your mix?
a. Looking at the sea — or whatever way you feel most in tune with while listening :)

q. describe a favourite object in your living room...
a. it’s an old piece of furniture where my mother kept all kinds of stuff, and those things are still inside.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or not music)?
a. Yes, I’m currently working on a painting about my uncle who passed away recently, and I would also like to dedicate this mix to him, as I love him.

With artwork by Yaro Svyatykh and design by Amos Turner, Post Ambient Lux unfolds as one of the most appendix.files-coded releases to date—a record equally concerned with process, perception, and the emotional charge of deep listening.

The album finds focus in its opening track, Melted Reality—a trickling digital stream that gives way to a tidal swell of noise. It's followed by Spectral Tracing, featuring Corell, where this momentum disintegrates and reforms—sonic matter in flux, with molecular fragments melting, colliding, and dissolving again. On Emitting, shimmering vistas seem to generate in real time, like catching up to the edge of the universe and witnessing the raw formation of particles, dust, and energy—enormous and infinitesimal at once. Tangible references dissolve in an instant a million years long. This is an album for the deep thinker and deep listener—as much philosophical as it is sonic. If science fiction were rewritten with the restraint of contemporary minimalism, and stitched into a Craig Green silhouette, this is what it would sound like. On Deviate, the machinery of this imagined space clicks into motion—a dimensional garment assembled in precise layers, operating in intricate order to maintain equilibrium in a liminal zone.

Flipping the disc, we first hear Sensors—where rhythmic consistency hints at orientation, and a sense of direction begins to emerge. Though distractions abound, the path remains porous. Enter Soft Liminal—a moment of surrender where you begin to trust the chaos, and even find nourishment in it. That state of perpetual near-emergence begins to feel less like tension, more like clarity. Involved, featuring Nick Malkin, introduces a familiar tone breaking through the fog—an anchor within the blur—offering reality not as imposition, but as option. Then comes Submerge, inviting a full descent into liquid data, vast fields of signal moving through the nervous system. The closing piece, Sign, gathers these moments with a sense of quiet coherence. This is the wisdom of ambience—a kind of Tao for experimental sound—philosophy rendered as aesthetic, as method, as both catalyst and control.
