The A side "Understory" is a percussion-heavy roller with Far Eastern vibes running throughout the tune, bringing all the elements together  into a piece of music that is both technical and organic. Dzheimz & Ninja 'Karjala / Varta' Remixes

December 2016 has brought us remixes of two true Estonian drum & bass classics originally written by Dzheimz & Ninja, both released as part of their album 'Newdancebeat' sixteen years ago in 2000. 

When 'Karjala' came out back in the day it created substantial waves in the Estonian underground scene and has since become a true d&b classic in the Estonian scene. It is only fitting that now, in 2016, one of the more interesting current Estonian drum&bass outfits - HeadRead, with Planeet and Slammin behind this duo - were asked to remix this beauty. A daunting task indeed, but the boys did not flinch. They went and produced a beast of a remix that not only stays true to the original tune's ethos, but also revamps it to current drum & bass standards, both sonically and creatively. What's truly interesting is that both the 'Karjala' original and the remix - Karjala is also the name of a barren and icy region that lies between Finland and Russia - precisely encapsulate this landscape - the cold, ominous stabs motifs and pulsating midrange synths vibe throughout the tune in perfect harmony with the weighty sub-bass and crisp drum engineering - this is polar night rave magic! 

The flipside takes a different approach from the icy soundscapes of 'Karjala', with Planeet (one half of HeadRead) channeling late 90's and early 00's Ed Rush & Optical influenced techstep to create a monster remix of 'Varta'. The track opens up with a build-up combination of drum percussion and electronic effects, creating a cinematic sci-fi atmosphere - picture a spaceship crash-landing on a hostile alien planet. This leads up to the drop which takes off in a spectacular manner - the bassline carries the track forward with pure energy and the meticulously produced drums provide a solid backbone to create the texture for the dancefloor banger it is. Again, the track's name 'Varta' (if you don't know, look it up!) perfectly encompasses the music - the midrange and atmo pad build-ups that are rising throughout the track, created through brilliant sound design elements, scream 'release, restart, recharge'!

HeadRead (DSCI4 / Kos.Mos.Music / Absys Records) - with Planeet and Slammin behind this duo - open the remix EP with a nostalgia-heavy early-2000s reece infused rave drum&bass anthem. The pristine drumwork and an ever-evolving texture of synths and stabs make this an unforgettable remix, working equally well on the radio and on the dancefloors.

inZtance (Med School / Warm Communications / Vampire Records) produced "Fool's Gold" featuring Laura James on vocals in late 2015 and it was released a year later as a part of his solo EP on Through Sounds. The whole EP, but particularly "Fool's Gold", received a lot of great feedback and garnered the attention of some heavyweights in the scene, including airplay on BBC Radio 1. 

It seemed only logical to revisit the themes of the original track by having Through Sounds label regulars put their own twist on it. Insert into the equation artists like HeadRead, Out Of Fuel, Bone and Insect and the remix EP was born.

With the digital release mastered by none other than Break (Symmetry Records) of Cygnus Music and the vinyl masters provided by Subvert Central, we have included the talents of the best in the scene to make sure that we perfect every aspect of this great collection of music.

Out Of Fuel (Alphacut / Translation / Scientia Music), the only group outside of Estonia on this EP, consisting of scene veterans Matti & Otto from Finland, are a welcome addition to this EP. Their trademark half-time approach with reverb heavy cinematic soundscapes transform the original track into a melancholic journey, filled with narratives reminiscing bygone eras.

Soul Deep Digital and Marcus Tee are proud to announce the release of the “Take A Look Around EP.”  You might know the Nottingham based producer from his solid releases on Influenza, 4 Corners, and Complex Records.  This time he drops his impressive debut EP on Soul Deep.  The laid back vibes of “Take A Look Around,” kicks things off, featuring fluttering keys, snappy drums and soothing rhodes chords.  The track takes an unexpected turn at the drop and unleashes an undeniable dancefloor groove.  “A Place Where I Belong,” is up next and features sultry Rhodes keys, soulful female vocals, and some popping drums that provide the perfect punch to the track.  “Next To Me,” is up next and is highlighted by it’s smooth Rhodes chords, deep sub bassline, and echoing efx.  “Transition Sequence,” rounds out the EP is style with it’s smooth pads, analog mid bass sounds, and rolling drums that anchor things down.  Overall, Marcus Tee paints a picture of where he’s going with his production style, creating his own place where he belongs.
