@djgagreflex brings her Sisyphean Rhythms EP to Scuffed Recordings, weaving deftly between weighty breaks and percussive, rolling house across three tracks.

Originally from Seattle and now based in Berlin, Gag Reflex has spent the past few years gathering pace as a DJ in the U.S. with residencies in Seattle, Portland and San Francisco - and more recently with club appearances in Berlin and Lisbon, along with mixes for platforms including Rinse FM, HÖR, and Honey Soundsystem.

As a producer, her work nods variously to classic rave, techno and breaks influences, with a penchant for percussion and dark, oppressive atmospherics. With previous releases coming via none/such, Circa AD and Naive sublabel Naivety, Gag Reflex has gone a long way to establishing her sound and picking up some heavyweight support in the process.

The Sisyphean Rhythms EP features three new tracks exploring different facets of Gag Reflex’s sound - from the intense surge of opener Concussion, to the rolling flow of club tool Spit, and closing with the all-out rush of Valve.

Gag Reflex - Concussion

One for a night-time drive, a dance with friends or a moment alone, Kalopsia provides you with the space (and place) you might not have realised you need. Unafraid but not arrogant, this EP wanders into emotions with enough space to take your own journey, but never leaves your side. Kalopsia is an invitation to explore your nuances and travel wherever you dare.

T SOMETHING G
Always nearby, but never close enough, T Something G provides a space for youthful (sometimes naïve) curiosity and questioning. Ever present tambourine teases at something more but you never reach it – at least not the way you’d expect.
“What happened?” “What did they do to you?”  
Maybe you already know the answer, or maybe you wish you didn’t know, or maybe you haven’t been asked before, maybe you have no fucking idea. Either way, it doesn’t matter. T Something G is asking, and it’s listening.

HEARING VOICES
Hearing Voices opens like an eerie dollhouse – haunting, ominous, looming. Despite the growing hum, there is a sense of ‘lack’ with the spaces left in the track providing a kind of hollow weightlessness. Repetitive low-end beats keep you grounded as sound speeds past your face like a cool breeze. Hearing Voices recognises the strength required to keep going in tough times but reminds you of your ability to persist.

AMBER
Amber is a dynamic journey through the abyss of reflection, but not necessarily resolution. Like a busy but well-planned motorway, the song moves with intention and consideration. You can find a certain beauty in controlled chaos, and Amber proves this. Soulful vocals flutter through slowly and swirl back into the music as swiftly as they come.
Closing like an interrupted thought and demanding the replay button, Amber is as fluid and multifaceted as the thoughts, emotions, and life of its listener.

U 4 ALL
Mechanical breakbeat shatters and splinters as breathy, pitch-shifted vocals float by. Metallic kicks and snares slice through the atmospheric low end but don’t disrupt the tracks overall course. The track moves through the spectrum of emotion like a grieving mind; anger, bargaining, accepting, and repeating. U For All finishes with a level of ambiguity while still feeling instinctive and relieving, like a bird disappearing into a dark horizon.

LIMELIGHT 
Orchestral and atmospheric, Limelight begins at the end. Diving in headfirst, the track invokes a sense of longing – for information, understanding, connection. The song builds to something dark and solemn but intriguing, like a painful yet relieving realisation. Distorted vocals pull you out but leave you in a kind of aural limbo, unable to predict what’s next. There is a confused emptiness created by the repetitive build and release of synth that threatens to consume but is ultimately held together by the song's ability to transform with grace.

Mitigation
Soft and gentle, short and sweet. Mitigation is reminiscent of a child’s wind-up box but is far from childish. Like a big, cathartic breath before diving back underwater, you know comfort can’t last forever. Mitigation is a sentimental stroll through experience, a soundtrack for re-living bittersweet memories. Is the story it’s telling sad or happy? You decide.

Lithe Remix
A grimy, futuristic version. The limited vocals in the initial take the forefront and are supported by a comfortingly familiar breakbeat that has many shifting forms throughout the track. Deep bass rides in to support the weight of the vocals and drums. This one is one for some good headphones.

Small Crab
Small Crab brings life to spaces that you didn’t know where there and bends the song into a new form. As primal beats keep time, industrial flairs slice through to create a sonic playground. One for a summer sunset disco by the water with your mates (minus the mosquitos).

Didn't think i'd ever let this one see the light of day, it got dropped of history of jungle ages ago against my will. But i hope it puts a smile on peoples faces, well i think it's funny, especially when that push me samples comes in, i'm laughing now actually. Anyway, i don't pretend to know anything about 90's music, i was 12 when the 90's ended, what i really know about is the noughties, i'm a fucking proud millenial and drank WKD's dancing to Eric Prydz in shite nightclubs, you know what i mean? i used to have Tomcraft on a 64mb mp3 player and skate around hereford thinking it were amazing. Bring back the nougties lol.

I obvs have sampled a bunch of awesoe tunes and if those that made them want me to take this down then i ofcourse will. I just love these tunes, this is done completely for non-commercial purposes.

Before we dive into new Ruffhouse joints, we’d first like to point out that this EP is dedicated to Tommi, the guy who always had positive energy. We will remember his outstanding personality forever.

After a short hiatus due to these uncertain times, Ruffhouse Industries is back on track to deliver the much anticipated debut EP „Energia“ by Helsinki’s club music stalwart Koala. 

Linked up with Ruffhouse in 2014 through Desto’s Signal Life Radio show, he became a mainstay of Munich’s notorious Club music collective on account of his presence on every Rufftrax compilation up to date. 

„Energia“ is all about the dancefloor, although it kicks off with a rather mellow – in relation to the common Ruffhouse standards – track entitled „Laisser“, driven by swinging percussion and an eerie synth reminiscing of a Sci-Fi scenario from outer space.

On „I Came To Steal Your Dancers“, Koala’s intentions of shelling the dancefloor come to light as the track kickstarts into an obviously UK-Funky inspired Club banger equipped with hard hitting vocal chops, drum rolls and a bone rattling low end bassline.

The following title track of the EP represents the essence of Koala’s predilection for marching drums, growling sound effects and clanking percussions. Needless to say that „Energia“ lives up to its name and provides a huge funky factor.

From what started with a massive Ruffhouse crew gathering in an unknown cabin, maybe somewhere in the Transylvanian woods, Koala took the sound files and distilled another veritable banger. “Cabin II” definitely 2 steps into Garage, once again bringing those distinguishing delay drum effects that we love so deeply.

Cakeshop resident and Ruffhouse member Mignon from Seoul put his hands on “Laisser”. His remix provides a subtler approach to the harmonics and percussion while having the vibe on lock.

In order to round up this EP Strict Face steps into the ring. He is pretty well known for his releases on NLV and Local Action. The Aussie redefined “Energia”, and the artist’s name is exactly what you gonna make when you hear this track for the first time. Angry, noisy and distorted sounds are what he assigns to the original.

CLUB CHAI Vol. 2 is a collection of tracks by artists whose work truly embodies the Club Chai ethos that exists in storytelling through sound. As we close out the label, this release remains a lustrous perspective on the future.

The archive book is a culmination of all the moving parts that make up Club Chai at once – a way to honor the project's complexity and intimacy. A way to honor the project's complexity and intimacy. How do we remember and archive something that is really made up of a fleeting feeling? Being on the dancefloor with friends, singing in unison or zoning out in complete bliss. It feels right to create something physical that can be held, touched and encountered slowly and 
carefully. Making this book entirely with friends makes it feel even more intimate and special.
