philosophy:
I did a 2 hour ambient mix for Feed Your Head earlier in the year and so when Jo Seph kindly asked me to do something for Sonic Treasures I wanted to do something different. I've never been a DJ or really attempted anything like this but collected together tracks from the year so far from all bases, with some exclusives purloined from nefarious sources. As with most things musically Andrew Weatherall looms large over the second half of the mix, the first half I wanted to start off slow and try put in some of the excellent downtempo hiphop that's being produced at the moment, but barely scratched the surface. So it's ended up as quite a BPM journey and I hoped I've just about managed to pull if off. Apologies and huge respects to real DJs for any iffy mixing, I definitely won't be attempting anything live soon. Huge thanks to Jo Seph, The Flightpath Estate, Mark Ratcliff, Skip Wimbish, Paul Watt, Shunt Voltage, Mathias Nilsson and David Holmes

Derry producer The Cyclist is, by his own admission, a throwback.

In a manifesto-of-sorts on his Soundcloud page, he sets out his intentions as “an attempt to get to a time in electronic music where everything sounds warmer”, citing “more techno-ey tunes by Throbbing Gristle” and Boards of Canada’s Geogaddi “but with the more danceable edge of New Order” as inspirations. “This needed to be done”, his statement reads, “And needs to be done more. Let’s call it Tape Throb for now.”

Of course, in 2015 this necessarily make The Cyclist unique: more than enough virtual ink has been spilt on noise-techno crossover records, and “tape throb” might as well be the M.O. of a label like 1080p Collection. He does, however, do it better than most. 2013’s Bones in Motion was a beautiful record (as Angus Finlayson wrote in FACT, an album “that renders even simple arrangements partially indecipherable – as if they hover teasingly out of focus – and lends these tracks a certain cryptic quality”), and the more recent Flourish and Hot House have developed The Cyclist’s knack for saturating memorable melodies in fuzz until they sound like just that: memories.

As previously mentioned, The Cyclist isn’t alone in his journey, and his FACT mix feels like a minor manifesto in itself. Although it only includes three tunes by him, the whole set fits his vision, with music from Fort Romeau, Anthony Naples and Suicide captured through that same gauzy lens. Hot House is out now on Music is for Losers.

It's almost ludacris to think that Slam, the Glaswegian techno duo from the North have been producing and releasing records for almost thirty years now. Throughout that time they have been involved in the formation of the Soma label, the imprint which released the earliest Daft Punk records, music from Surgeon, Funk D'Void and many many more. Slam's influence as a duo has been prolific and they are appreciated and respected across the world as much as they are in their hometown. Stepping up to the table with something a little outside the norm, we put the pair through their paces as they contribute an all ambient mix to our Monday series which sees them delve deep through the relams of Global Communication and beyond. This one is pretty special.
