The story of London-based DJ @ambient-babestation's alias is a good one. A decade ago she worked in the marketing department for a British adult entertainment channel, and would occasionally do the voiceovers for their promotional material. After she joked to a friend that she'd play an ambient set at Rye Wax and layer sexy vocals over the top, she ended up on the poster under that name and thought, 'fuck it'. A mix by the Anglo-Indian/Burmese DJ is typically varied. Playing regularly on Noods Radio and Balamii and delivering guest mixes for the likes of Lobster Theremin and Club Glow, she fits together sonic curios like witchcraft samples, Indonesian doom metal and dark ambient (to name just a few). In true ABM style, her shape-shifting Dummy Mix features spoken word interludes as well as blindsiding techno and a helping of Nine Inch Nails. "Anyone familiar with Ambient Babestation Meltdown mixes will know I often use live spoken word vocals or found vintage samples to create textures and themes," she explains. "For this one I wanted to explore the idea of friendship due to how much I'm missing my wider network and how much my close friends and chosen family have been incredibly supportive this last year. Despite my DJ name, this mix actually features no ambient music (definitely indicative of my desire to get back on the dancefloor) but does cherry-pick bits from a lot of talented friends that I feel very lucky to know."
