McGill Students’ Nightline

In this segment meet Belle and Jim, two collective members from the Union for Gender Empowerment (UGE). The UGE is a trans positive and anti-racist feminist organization and is part of the Students’ Society of McGill University. The UGE operates an alternative library and a cooperative pay-what-you-can “shop” (The Co-op) stocking ecologically responsible menstrual products, DIY sex toys, safer sex supplies, and gender empowerment items, as well as hosts events and advocates for social justice issues. The Union for Gender Empowerment

TIAO has launched a new segment called “Support Networks of McGill”.  Over the next couple of episodes, we will be highlighting different student groups on campus who provide support, raise awareness and engage in activism at McGill.

Women are too often discouraged from discussing the taboos surrounding their bodies. These topics are often thought to be reserved for closeted discussions between patients and doctors. However, Tori Ford, the founder and Editor in Chief of Medical Herstory, believes otherwise.  

Join us in this 2 part series of Medical Herstory as Tori shares her own personal experience navigating Canada’s healthcare system, the repeated disbelief and minimization she received, and how these experiences eventually led to the creation of Medical Herstory; a web-based platform offering a glimpse into female-presenting people’s experiences related to their health and wellness. 

Tori Ford is an MPhil student in Health, Medicine, and Society at the University of Cambridge. She holds a BA in Gender, Sexuality, Feminist, and Social Justice Studies with minors in History and the Social Studies of Medicine from McGill University. Her research and activism focus on gender health equity. Tori is a proud recipient of the McGill Scarlet Key Award and the Cambridge Vice-Chancellor’s Social Impact Award for her initiative: Medical Herstory.

In this second part, I chat with two other members of the Medical Herstory Team: Melissa Kuch and Ashlee Pereira-Buchanan to talk about their journey, what got them involved, and their role with Medical Herstory. Bios:

Melissa Kuch: An OSVRSE peer educator, Melissa is entering her final semester at McGill majoring in English (Cultural Studies). Her passion for medical equality led her to minor in Social Studies of Medicine. She is an editor for Medical Herstory and serves on the executive team for McGill's Women's Health Advocacy Club where she takes her passions out of the classroom. 

Ashlee Pereira-Buchanan: Editor for Medical Herstory and recent McGill B.A. graduate in Psychology with a double minor in Behavioural Sciences and Anthropology. Previously the Events Team Lead at OSVRSE, Ashlee currently works in the Operations department at the Royal Bank of Canada while pursuing a graduate diploma in Human Resources Management.
