Europe is sinking into populism. The void left by politicians is slowly being filled by petty discourses promoting hatred and mistrust, encouragin people to turn upon themselves unable to find adequate responses in a globalised world.
Europe seem stuck in quicksand and every week, new statements and events drag it slowly downwards.
Dance music itself can often seem like a reflection of this rampant populism, only offering, cheap and easy throw away sensations and consumerism, recalling the « bread and games » from ancient Rome.
Personalizing this political decay within the club world, « The Populists » thrive to give clubbers back what they deserve - a place for open minded people - by bringing meaning to a music that is often devoid of it.
The club has always been a place for freedom and emancipation, for social and sensorial experimentation, and unfortunately today, it’s often a space of consumption with its formatted shapes, infinite tunnel of build-ups, drops, breakdowns and clinical productions.
￼￼Behind every « The Populists » tracks is an aspect conquering and destructive populsm. Behind each of their performance, a way to resist it.

Chloe : ‘’We are happy to bring you the third opus of the Lumière Noire collection. This one is a one-way ticket to Los Angeles - Mexico – Paris offered by our beloved mariachis Moderna Y Theus Mago. Immersive slow-tracks, techno tension at its best with sharp acid bass lines.

Behind Theus Mago is hidden Mexican producer Mateo Gonzalez, involved in several dance music projects such as Bufi (Kitsuné / Discotexas), Sonido Fantasma (Turbo recordings) and co-manager of the new label Duro. DJ & producer Moderna started in music as a producer in a noise band [The Static Cult]. She used to work for the prestigious label Ghostly International for a long time. There, she began to evolve by producing and promoting events all over the world, collaborating with artists such as Tycho, Telefon Tel Aviv and Matthew Dear.

Moderna & Theus Mago met in Mexico a day of Ley Seca [when the Mexican government shut all bars and clubs down the entire weekend for voting purposes]. That night, as DJ’s in the city were gig-less, they organized an impromptu “illegal” house party outside the city, with most of the local heroes (Mijo, Sanfuentes, Bufi, Andre VII, Moderna, Max Schmitt, Watty and more).

This EP is the result of the Ley Seca, three tracks of pure modern techno fuelled by a fight for your right to party. ‘Dog Is Calling You’ is an expanding slow mixture of acid & techno sounds, ‘Papa En Roy’ has something effective & functional creating classic techno with an obsessive and repetitive bassline further fuelled  by Moderna's vocals. ‘Asesino Psicotico’  fuses techno energy with a house-tinged groove. Dog Is Calling You (Die Wilde Jagd Remix) then closes the package and the band have reworked Moderna y Theus Mago to perfection bringing something more organic to this technoid track.’’

Pardon Moi is the Berlin-based New Wave Duo featuring the British producer and song writer James Brook & German producer and DJ Thomas Freudenthal. „Addiction“ sounds like John Foxx and Gary Numan joined forces with the global chug, dark disco and synth wave haute volée. This track would have been in the UK Top 20 in 1981, for at least three weeks, we are sure! And the remixes are great too! The Kike am Radar remix adds some high noon post-punk edge to the game, James Rod turns „Addiction“ into a dusty, slow motion new wave monster from outer space. K-Effect turn it into a chuggy synth wave groove and MontCosmic's punchy remix is maybe the tightest of them all with its anthemic vocals, driving new beat acid synths, hypnotic grooves and heavy handclaps. A quality package of New Wave!

Volume 2 of retakes of C Cat Trance’s unique post-punk meets world beat brings the collaboration between Malka Tuti and Emotional Rescue to a close.   Here again, the label’s call in a selection of heads to re-envisage a modern vision of the music to present a perfect representation for today.  

Starting with Red Axes retake of an almost untouchable classic, the booming, sound system-quaking version of Shake The Mind is a heads down mover that should add to their reputation and finally give DJ’s a follow up to utilise.

Next, Jamie Paton gives the perfect trance-inducing, dubbed edit of Take Me To The Beach.   Looping the drums and horns infinitum, building through repetition was never truer, before release.   His individual take on remixes is again displayed, deep dubs from the brethren.  

To close the 2 EPs, the final side is given to a meeting of older and established artist and new, upcoming, but already respecting crew.   In Prins Thomas, the psychedelic protagonist of the heralded northern disco lights, his name was first to be penciled.   His live, drum-heavy reversions have become trademark and in Sudaniyya, it’s all there.   Subtle, confident and alluring, Thomas builds to a steady jam of machine and man, letting it all hang and simply, groove along.   

In finale, Khidja bring in friend and fellow Romanian production rising star, Borusaide to cover Simple Helen.   A slow-burning ode in original form, their genius reversion captures the essence and much more, giving C Cat Trance’s music a whole new lease, while presenting their production talent and musicianship.  As was the hope and intention of these updated versions - Re-mixes for the 21st Century - with a nod to the past, but feet firmly in the future.   Play loud and play out.

Now 2 years later (July 2015) we're at 23 releases from a range of artists and remixers, with one release scheduled each month.


Duncan Gray (biog) : Perhaps best known as one half of the Sons of Slough along with Ian Weatherall - see discogs entry for details of releases. The Sons were a formidable Live act (see You tube) playing regularly across the UK. DG's own releases also gained some popularity, starting with cuts for Scatological (1996) Blue Black, Whole9Yards, SaltHill, through to Aquamelon (2009). Since returning to music production in 2013 he has released tracks on NEIN, Eskimo, Blindetonation, Play Pal, Rock to The Beat, plus Andrew Weatherall's vinyl only Birdscarer label. He has played guitar on half a dozen AW remixes.

Yes, I do want to hear new tracks. I am always interested in music which features REAL INSTRUMENTS - or electronic originality. I'm getting fussy these days...please email files to the email address above. (don't just send a soundcloud link please) If you don't know what the sound of this label is like, don't bother sending me stuff. I get quite a few demos with a note saying "I love the sound of your label" from producers who have clearly never listened to any of our releases.

PLEASE NOTE : 2020 release schedule now full, but I can always make room for something spectacular, or a really cool remix...
