We return to the story Carl was telling from Episode 40. It begins with a schism in the Breakdown camp which would to the formation of Raw Deal and a whole new story unfolds. From the demo to The Bright Side, and all the things that would come later. We delve deep not just into Killing Time stories but of the transition in NYHC post CBGBs and beyond.
Carl's positive outlook despite things that have soured or not gone well is just one of the many great things about him. 
So much covered that I can't really summarize it better than someone who has done Hardcore for almost his entire life is happier than angry at the things that didn't work out and looks at it all as a blessing. 
I wish more people in hardcore could have his view and perspective.

Happy New Year! Welcoming in 2022 with a conversation with a friend whose story as far as I'm concerned has yet to be told from his perspective and needs to be heard. Rob Lind is the creative force behind both Blood For Blood and Ramallah. We speak on the early days of his life, the origins of Blood For Blood and then we go deeper into the his personal life and his own dealings with the devil and coming to full sobriety. Rob is an amazing artist, with lightning fast wit and a razor sharp tongue who showed a side of himself that is not only a testament to who he is as a person to come full circle but also sheds new light over his career. This is easily my favorite conversation for the show to date.

I've been saying that he was a future podcast guest, and with FYA weekend upon us, no better time to bring him on.
His humble beginnings finding hardcore in one of southernmost hardcore scenes in the US is already a phenomenal story, but it goes beyond that. From venturing beyond his home of Mobile, AL to hitting the road and finding hardcore friends from Florida to the Northeast and beyond, it made a lasting impression on him. He would eventually begin his label From Within helping release his friends demo tape. From Within would go quickly from a small diy label to a force to be reckoned with, releasing some of the best up and coming bands of the last few years in hardcore as well as releasing 2 of the One Scene Unity Comps which have become the Call For Unity/ Where the Wild Things Are of the modern days. His spirit and love for hardcore shines on this interview and as a younger guy whose heart and soul is put into the music and the scene, I am glad to have finally had him on the show.

John Joseph life has had more ups and downs and turns than any world class rollercoaster. In this brief conversation, we talked about where he drew his strength and adversity to fight past his addictions and drive himself towards success.
Many people fall victim to vices and never overcome or rise above it, but for John, he survived, he overcame and he pushed himself even harder when the CroMags fell apart. His story is outlined in his first book, Evolution of a CroMagnon, so I won't give you the bio, but we go into some cracks where we can hear more of his tale there and we go beyond into, into the drive towards his multi discipline training for the Ironman competitions he lives for. He has published 5 books and is working on his 6th, he is working on tv and movie scripts and he is also working as a life coach. As he approaches 60, he is still pursuing music with Bloodclot, which will have new music in the coming year.
Many of John's peers didn't make it to 30 or 50, while he is healthier physically and mentally than most half his age.
I love his story, I consider him to be a good friend and we had a great conversation.

With the last Eco Strike show happening last weekend, it was a good time to get a look at everything Lennon has done with all of his bands and projects. From South Florida, He was an integral part of the vegan sxe resurgence in south florida and had a hand in influencing kids to look back to the older 90s xxx bands, while playing shows all over with Blistered and then later with Eco Strike.
There is alot to his upbringing and his story is a great example of a young person in hardcore who has alot of talent and put alot into his scene with the hope of making hardcore a better place.

Beto's story is one for the history books in many ways. We walk with him as he puts the pieces together of how the small area of Queens would eventually produce so many important NYHC bands in just a small friend group, Dmize, Madball, Merauder just to name a few. He would over time end up playing in all 3 as well as playing/touring with 25 Ta Life when the band was at their peak. 
His story goes beyond his bands, to his family and the next generation of hardcore with his son Caiden Rosario of Reaching Out. 
Being friends with Beto and talking at shows for hours, I was hoping to finally get some of our conversations onto the podcast and I feel like this goes deep into his life from the very beginning, through his time spent building a name in the business world as well as raising a family with his wife Casey.

AJ has been a pivotal part of the Pittsburgh Area Hardcore scene for a long time before he was ever given credit for it. Continuing from the Ty Dawson episode last week, we learn even more about the western PAHC scene. 

Through the trials and tribulations, AJ has come to be at the center of all the best hardcore punk activity in his home area. Taking his distro to a brick and mortar record store, then renovating a church just outside Pittsburgh, PA to be a Record Store and Venue that has 2 separate rooms under the name Preserving Hardcore, he has come to be the King who built his own castle. 
His story is awesome and the fact that he still has time to perform with Facewreck just continues to show his dedication to the scene.

With This Is Hardcore 2023 just 2 weeks away, it was time to sit down with a legendary figure in Hardcore and a pioneer in pushing the boundaries of the genre in many ways. We talk of his childhood and its influences which would later come out in much of his music and art. Dwid had a very heavy influence in taking hardcore punk beyond the cookie cutter images and lyrical tropes with Integrity, the seminal Cleveland Based hardcore/metalcore band that has been a favorite in the underground for decades.

Episode 159 Pete Morcey. the Mayor of Brass City

Pete Morcey is an American Hardcore Punk Legend. From his earliest days at the Anthrax Club, to founding Forced Reality, one of the early great American Oi! bands. He would go on to front Higher Force, the first "heavy" hardcore band in Connecticut, which as a scene would become known for heavy bands like Hatebreed and others including 100 Demons, which the Higher Force guys would start up later in the 90s. 
Pete would eventually join 100 Demons in the mid 2000s, where they would release one of the genre defining metalcore records of that decade via Deathwish Inc. 
He along with friends would found Brass City Tattoo, as well as Shogun ScreenPrinting, Brass City Boss Sounds and the TNT Music Festival, which was a decade ahead of the current trend of Oi! /Hardcore. 
He has been there through all of this and still running strong. He has a few more shows with 100 Demons and plenty of new ideas for books, releases and more things to come.

Melissa grew up in Queens at a perfect time for find herself at the beginning of a new age of NYHC. From Bulldoze to Denied and others, the beginning of a heavier focus brought about the foundation of what alot of modern hardcore kids and bands are focused on, the "Beatdown" sound. Her story is awesome and she is at the right place at the right time for so many great moments. 
She has been a high school teacher for years but found time to start All Shall Suffer around the pandemic years and is playing This Is Hardcore this summer with Denied as part of their Reunion. 
This is a fun conversation and lots of great memories come back having her on the show.

Gavin grew up in LaHaina Hawaii, which recently was in the world news for horrendous fire which destroyed alot of the area. He would later live in Florida where he found Hardcore, started bands, booked shows etc. He returned to Lahaina to start a family and his long term project Still Proud Clothing. He is now on the verge of a new project, Ikaika, which he started with his close friend Josh Couture of Exit Strategy. Tragically Josh passed suddenly and now Josh White of Florida Mind and State of Mind booking is memorializing Josh with a festival 
in Ybor City, Fl November 8th and 9th. 

We talk about growing up & finding hardcore, leaving the mainland and returning home and what the future for Gavin, Ikaika and Still Proud will be.

Episode 170 Tom Brose of Confront
After trying to dig in on the Chubby Fresh episode and not getting deep enough, we were pointed towards Tom Brose, who would eventually connect with and bring many of the great 80's Revelation Bands and more to the area. Confront was a band started by kids in high school and were invested in the straight edge bands that were growing in popularity. Having a direct line of traffic as a major stop for most touring bands, starting Confront gave Tom, Steve Murad (Mean Steve later of OLC) and others like Outface - Charlie Garriga of Civ, Derrick Green of Sepultura and later Tony Erba and Face Value ample opportunities to play with a host of out of town bands. We go deep in Cleveland hardcore from as early as Tom could recall and we walk our way up to the 1st Integrity 7" , which soon after Tom moved to DC. 
Tom's story is a classic and his ability to recollect details from the past allows the story to fully develop in the conversation.

Deran Martinez grew up in the Gila River Indian Community, finding hardcore very much the way many of our guests' have. As he was coming up in the Reservation, he was introduced to having to take care of things with his hands. This would come to help him as he was playing shows and finding his path to the mats and ring with MMA.

One of the coolest parts of the interview for me was Deran offering to get music from the other bands in his area out to the world. So we attached Two Guns and Heresy AZ songs alongside Sacred Path's track

Alot of hardwork has been laid by Deran and others to uplift their community and bring hardcore back in a strong way in Arizona. Recent shows and new kids have shown the world what a show at a boxing gym can be. 

I had a great conversation with Deran and his experiences gave a deeper look into the indigenous hardcore kids and their lives on the reservations.

Episode 177 Shane of Fire In The Blood
Long before Fire In The Blood, Shane was cutting his teeth as most did finding local shows and the rest became history. Shane has been involved in the Central PA Hardcore scene for a long time, from booking shows, to playing in bands to generally just always being a recognized face within the community.
A few years back, Fire In the Blood broke out and began reigniting the fire in the Central PAHC area and has made a name for themselves over the past few years.
Fire In The Blood is playing Saturday August 9th as part of This Is Hardcore Fest 2025. They have a self released EP that is outstanding and they are going to tear the place apart.

As we close in on TIHC 2025, I got to speak with Jorge who is back once again playing This Is Hardcore. 
We start at his beginnings, finding music and like minded individuals in the most NYC way possible. Over the course of the last 30 + years, Jorge has fronted a few lesser known bands and we talk a bit about it and then his joining Merauder for the legendary recording of Master Killer. Alot of emotion came out of this conversation and at times we touch back on things that may conceptually not be in line with the modern hardcore scene, but it all lays out the path and history of Jorge and what he went through. 
Hope you enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed laughing and talking about older bands, metal and Jorge's many bands and aspirations.

An amazing quote from one of hardcore punk's hardest working record label owners. Over the last 25 years, Chris Wrenn has dedicated his life into releasing hundreds of records from both the best up and coming bands, as well as reissuing and archiving some of the great releases of yesterday. 

Chris speaks on the early days of the label, the trials and tribulations of a preinternet hc scene. He goes over many of the DIY aspects to his promotion and marketing in the early days and how it comes back into play decades later.

This is not a short listen, but its full of honesty, inspiration and a wealth of information for those thinking of starting a record label or looking to grow their label or for those who are just fans of the label's catalog and a great story behind the whole thing. 
At two and half hours long, it goes deep and gets into many aspects that are usually not talked about from distribution, marketing, A&R and the overall curating and control of one of the most successful independent record labels in the world.

On this episode, Sunny takes us down the rabbithole, from the beginning of his archive collecting, to bmx and early show footage. There is alot in here that hasn't been heard before and 99% is a great blueprint or inspiration to those who are looking to do something and need the drive or extra push to start. From his high school days through college, we follow him to his first year shooting This Is Hardcore. What started off as a novel concept grew Sunny and Hate5six.com from a local videographer to a name that is known throughout the world. Sunny's work would bring hardcore bands live sets to all the corners of the globe, and would later take Sunny out to Europe, Asia and Australia filming bands. 
Sunny uses Hate5six.com platform to inspire new generations of Hardcore Punk fans, shed new light on old tapes from the past and also shed light on the plight of marginalized peoples struggling against fascists. 

The interview runs well over 2 hours, but again when you sit down and give it a go, it will breeze by. 
Sunny has a great story, and incredibly inspiring drive to learn new skills, which would give him the opportunity to further his drive to shoot more bands, deliver more live sets and ultimately change his destiny from a computer programmer to a full documentarian/videographer.

There is just too much in this episode to jot down here, but its worth the full time and you will come out having new found understanding and respect for this man's drive or just be inspired by his ingenuity.

This Episode is dedicated to the Memory of Ashley Ann Lohrer Gunnells, Jeff's oldest daughter.
Her birthday was March 5, 1988. She would have been 33 on the day of this episode's release. 
May God Rest Her Soul. 
 
The conversation I had with Jeff took place over two separate recordings. We had some minor audio loss but as a whole, the context wasn't loss and this is by far the most honest and touching experiences I've had since I started the podcast. For those who don't know our guest, Jeff Gunnells or Jeff G is best known for being the guitarist and later singer of Detroit Hardcore legends Cold As Life. Much of the early portion of our conversation passed Jeff's background delved into the early days of CAL, the death of Rawn, the first singer of the band. We went through the trials and tribulations from the mid to late 90s and the various changes in members and musical direction. Later we would part from the band side of Jeff's life and go deeper and darker into what would lead Jeff into a 10 year jail sentence. There is so much to Jeff's story, the depth of honesty, the trials and tribulations and the discipline he had to get him through his sentence and the very essence of his emotions during this period and after. We spoke on Jeff's opportunity to become a vocational instructor while serving the end of his time, and how it affected him positively for when he was released. I've linked an article with Jeff being quoted during that time at the end of the notes. 
Jeff's story is better listened to then read in this format, I truly was stammering at one point as I was dealing with the depth of his story and the emotions in provoked. He held nothing back and shed his public mask as he would say and truly exposed himself and his failings and also his current feelings and how he sees things.
I knew we would have a great conversation, as we've not spoken in over 13 years, but I was unprepared for the revelations and the story of his own jailhouse redemption. I truly love this man as a brother and I have nothing but the utmost respect for his ability to share his own story of pain, love and growth as a man.
