She is an icon of folk music, she played her guitar upside down and backwards, and she served Don a fried chicken dinner when he got an opportunity to meet her in her home in Alexandria, Va.  In return he tried to teach her the Gary Davis tune "Candyman".  Don's roots run deep in folk music, not in just his knowledge of the genre, not just in the vintage instruments he owns and plays with deft skill, but in having encountered the artists themselves in live and personal settings. We continue our "front porch jam" by covering "Libba" Cotten's cherished tune; I play the main melody on an Ibenez OM guitar, Don joins in with his Washburn parlor, Gibson mandolin, and a dulcimer tuned to C--a string band to be sure;)

This album is shaped by the instruments that have meant the most to me. The piano was the first one. My grandmother taught me by ear in the living room, guiding me to listen for the notes instead of reading them. That memory still sits underneath everything I make.

I have always been drawn to the violin because it feels almost vocal, able to carry emotion the way a voice does. My wife has the same bond with the cello and the warmth it brings, so that sound found its place in our home too. Bringing all three together felt natural.

The music blends these roots into a Modern Instrumental style that is serene, expressive, and personal. The violin leads with lyrical motion. The cello adds depth and softness. The piano and Rhodes set the foundation. The sound moves through easy listening, neo classical color, soft R and B influence, and gentle cinematic moments.

These pieces were shaped with the help of current creative prompt based tools, guided carefully to preserve the same warmth and emotion these instruments have always held for us all.
