Music from Jinns and Tonic [Ep.3: Tennis Club Jazz]

There is quite an organic history to the Jinns and Tonic video series; heavily inspired by Katarakt’s Stoner House mixes and motivated by the termination of EELF’s first channel short of 200,000 subscribers. The first episode served as a call-to-action for rebuilding the temple that introduced multiple generations of listeners to the delicate pleasures of LoFi House. The culture pulled through and introduced new music from Quasar, DJ Ædidias, Nørus and several other young producers; setting a new precedent for premiering Various Artists compilations through YouTube/SoundCloud and giving exclusive content to the gate-keepers that deserve recognition for their curatorial duties. Consequently, Critique is scaling the influence of its artists and itself by facilitating these opportunities for all heavy-hitters, up-and-comers and superior-selectors to participate in something special, rooted in love for audiovisual ecstasy.

The third episode features the Critique wrecking crew DJibouti, DJacuzzi and GL4M alongside Rob Soul artist Dan Corco, Georgia State University student David Bulay, Francophone extraordinaire DJ Psychiatre and LoFi House's newest wizard TOMATOSLICE. While keeping to the series’ roots, “Tennis Club Jazz” departs from creating another hazy, expansive atmosphere and enters the Spring Equinox’s dance floor via red carpet, catwalk strut. Parisian DJ & Producer Tour-Maubourg has teamed up with Roy Ford and Artist V for two remixes of "Victoria's Secrets," taking the tracks to a stripped back dub sound, evocative of the late 90s New York club scene. With support of the original from industry veterans such as Myd, Quentin Harris & Don Diablo, the remixes are sure to be showing up in record bags all over this summer. The release is the second package in a series of remixes of last year’s Fordian Slip, releasing through Spring and Summer 2023.

Continuing a strong spring season, roku welcomes Gaston Sosa to the label for his debut EP.  Since first appearing in 2019 as part of 3rd Avenue’s ‘We Are The Future’ series, Argentinean artist Gaston Sosa has enjoyed a steady rise within the global progressive house scene. Noted for his blend of groovy basslines and cutting edge design qualities, the San Luis resident has excelled at creating his own brand of progressive house, making him one of Argentina’s emerging talents. Flown Records, Mango Alley and The Soundgarden, amongst others have been vehicles for some of Gaston’s most notable work, in turn earning support from progressive house tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. With 2025 being highlighted by an EP for Kebin van Reeken’s Venture Records, Gaston now adds roku to his discography with ‘New Beginning’, alongside remixes from HAFT and Fabri Lopez.

The lead selection 'AMEP' finds Gaston showcasing his dancefloor minded ethos. Its deep drive is anchored by strong kick drums, wispy atmospherics and percussive flashes, tastefully building to a wild-eyed intensity of heartfelt vocals and piano-led melodies. With a poignant spirit, Gaston pulls from his expansive repertoire as the main break takes shape, infusing shimmering synths, hopeful pads and luminous tones with a gentle vortex of orbiting effects; resulting in what is sure to be a memorable dancefloor moment. The companion piece 'Mayo' follows and is an apt barometer of where Gaston's headspace is at, as he lets muscular beats lay the foundation for flickering percussion, squelchy synth mutations and emerging vocals to create a darker monochrome. Energies shift and tension rises, bringing depth and space across a dramatic break, before getting washed away in waves of noise for a thrilling conclusion that’s perfectly dialled for peaktime play.

This one marks a new direction for me musically. We’ve always loved Wain Maady Wain by Saint Levant, it’s such a powerful and emotional track on its own. So we challenged ourselves to create an edit that respects the original’s vibe while giving it a fresh pulse. Hope you feel the journey in this one. Big love to Saint Levant for the inspiration.
