As we continue our mission of dancefloor exploration into the colder days ahead, we reanimate one of our favorite revenants from the bottomless underworld to warm us back up.

An immortal product of the robust Detroit scene, Joel Dunn now serves as a commander in our growing Satellite Trax fleet. Last year's "Michigan & Rosa EP" [STRX008] under his dubstep-centric alias OktoRed cracked our foundation with blistering bass weight. This time, he returns to our sublabel by way of his Marshall Applewhite project, cunningly named after the deranged leader of Heaven's Gate.

Known for cultivating bass workouts that gravitate towards modern electro, Marshall Applewhite is back with a fresh tracklist of cult classics. "We Dress For Dinner EP" is a hate letter to the eerie autumn breeze felt after supper, capturing the essence of our shapeshifter's many stylistic forms. For his slower paced, hypnosis-inducing tracks, he has coined the term "sludge" as a niche descriptor and potential subgenre to build upon. This can be heard in the opener "Acid Beans," a midtempo meltdown and theme song of experiencing poison damage. The EP looks into the future with "Ravioli Raid," stepping on the tempo throttle with its clear ghettotech influence and ode to pasta. "Old Risotto Lung Charlie" keeps the octane flowing through cleverly syncopated yet unforgiving bassline intended to devour dimly lit dancefloors. The acidic bassline in "Meat Droplets" is an insignia of Detroit dwellers, assembled around an inimitable groove reminiscent of early techno mornings. "Sunday Dishes" is a suitable pick-me-up for weekend warriors in the form of smooth, tasteful jungle with no aftertaste.

As a newfound tradition and homage to last year's "Vengabus" on STRX008, Marshall Applewhite closes with another Bandcamp-exclusive track. "Mr. Vain Cover" flips Culture Beat's 90s anthem into a DJ tool drenched in his "sludge" aesthetic. What he hilariously described as "MTV techno" is willfully drained into a garbage disposal for our morbid curiosity.

There are few entities that better represent our personal slice of the Motor City's vibrant underground than Marshall Applewhite. His latest offering is yet another testament to the urban grit and grueling bass that are integral components of our sonic DNA. An apocalyptic vision, the ‘Discipline EP’ from Katharsys and Forbidden Society Recordings brings together drum & basses darker elements. Broodily standing in three parts, it packages a sound pushed by the duo since their inception. Beginning their musical voyage within the French bass world, they’ve carved themselves a persona whilst taking influences from the European circuit. A hotly tipped infusion of neuro and hard nailing basslines, prepare to be immersed within the world of Kartharsys. 
The production outfit began working together in 2001, inspired by the dark groove of artists like Tech Itch and wanting to provide their own take on the subgenre. Progressively intense, their wide range of styles becomes clear even on first listen. Having previously produced dubstep on an array of different levels, their boundary crossing selection stretches from track to track. They make their intentions known, bringing you upfront, techy power-cuts that seep deeper and deeper into your ear drums with every listen. 
First up is the forebodingly named ‘Dead Never Stay Dead’ and the title alone lets you know what you’re in for. Creeping whispers meet with you during its intro, gradually building you up between quickly flicking hi-hats and siren like snare. Cinematic sample creates an atmosphere which stays with the track from start to finish and it’ll be difficult to pull yourself away from its film score horror sequences. Kartharsys really prepare you for what’s about to be unleashed in the following two tracks.
Title track ‘Disciple’ is slightly more orchestral in its engineering. Cleverly adding layer by layer, its reverberating kick drum sends you on your way. Bit by bit, distorted beats take you in even further, with stocky subs to drop you down a winding chasm of cranking drums. This one is for the gloomier months, your perfect summer finisher that’ll remind you just how far down the rabbit hole can go. 
Finishing off the EP is ‘Brain Implant’.  Beware of what you’re about to step into, because when those drums hit they punch harder with every cycle. Soon you become entwined within this record’s pulsing composition and it won’t let go once you’re in its grasp. A sci-fi voice over gradually takes you there and just like an amusement ride you’re peddled into all-out chaos. Kartharsys presents the most driving slice of their repertoire with ‘Disciple’. Although, looking back at this whole body of work, it’s easy to see how it was delivered so effortlessly.

The ‘Destruction Funk EP’ hits hard from the off and never lets go, drawing from FS’s years of experience in the scene with touches of old school amongst the tech, this is one for dance floors across the land this year.

“I have been working on this new EP for the past 6 or 7 months. It’s taken a while as I’ve not been forcing myself, instead I’ve only been setting foot in the studio when I’ve felt some real inspiration. I think this way we get the best results in the music and it’s also a lot more fun. I spend a lot of time editing, pushing my boundaries further and I’ve struck a nice balance of neuro and dark & hard D&B that should work with a lot of audiences.More to come out later this year, next EP is almost ready so be prepared!”

Forbidden Society is a name which many seasoned drum & bass fans will be familiar with. Not only is this the pseudonym of a tastemaker within the Czech Republic, it’s also the brand which the producer has built around his hard-hitting cuts. Jindrich Brejcha has built the label from its foundations and as a result, he’s become one of the most prominent musical influences hailing from its home country. However recently the new direction which he’s undertaken has resulted in him moving over from the otherwise cut-throat levels of bass he’s championed, to moodier, more rolling beat patterns which still highlight Forbidden Society’s darker undertones. 
The next part of his discography demonstrates the hard-hitting, finely tuned production which he’s become renowned for, although through a different lens. And it’s a course which his vast audiences will welcome with open arms, especially due to the high-arching skillset which Forbidden Society molds around this new sound. The ‘Deadbox’ EP features eight brand new selections, rolling through from its growling title-track, to the aptly named ‘FCK Publicity’. It’s an introspective look into the journey of Forbidden Society, one marked by tracks like the ones given a platform throughout the ‘Deadbox’ EP. 
‘RattleSphere’ with its shaking percussive patches drives you into the new sphere which Forbidden Society is reigning supreme over, whereas tracks like ‘Empty Eyes’ and ‘Rustler’ continue to move you into his subterranean depths. ‘Go to Hell’ and ‘Swag Walk’ follow his descent, whilst ‘Reason’ completely flips the switch, unveiling an unknown subsection of his musical landscape, one pinpointed by sweeping melodic layers. Then finally, ‘FCK Publicity’ is a lumbering, half-time delivery and ‘Deadbox’ is a raucous, heavy hitting offering with its slamming kick drums. 
The EP guides you through Forbidden Society’s change of course – but it’s one which still platforms him as a tastemaker of his craft. Something which certainly won’t disappoint his huge following.
