His name Malcom Gladwell, writer at the New Yorker, author of several New York Times Bestselling books, and now host of the podcast Revisionist History. We're told that talent and hard work pays off. But we've all seen instances where people who were equally or even less talented and hard working than we are, still got the raise, the buzz, the promotion, or the recognition that we so keenly wanted for ourselves.

My guest today says that instead of getting jaded, you need to understand that hard work and talent, while necessary, aren't sufficient for success. His name is Albert-László Barabási, and he's a professor of network science and the author of the book The Formula: The Universal Laws of Success. We begin our conversation discussing how László's work in network science helped him uncover the hidden connections that lead to success. László then explains the difference between performance and success, and how it's possible to be a high performer, but not be successful. We then dig into the five universal laws that László and his researchers found cut across the achievement of success in every field, along with practical takeaways you can start implementing in your life to experience more success yourself.

Today is a troubling day for many in the UK. After the results of an election that was plagued and stained with lies and deception, we are now left in a very precarious position. Many friends are feeling very dispirited and lost today, as am I. So, I sat in the studio this morning and improvised live to the celebratory speech of the winning party. In response to the situation I then reversed parts of it, as well as using a recording of this very speech and buried it deep within the music, again playing backwards. It's clear to many that this political situation is not taking us forwards, but rather back to a nostalgic and challenging past. So, for this moment, use this music to relax and switch off the news.

Part One: A Grand Adventure

By age 22, Janet had graduated with a BA in Communications, majoring in Psychology, become a punk rock model, Dolly covergirl, movie actress, soapie star, restaurant owner, radio DJ and Australia’s youngest ever copywriter to win a Lion at Cannes.  

As co-founder of Oddfellows Ad agency, she went onto become the most controversial woman in advertising until, seeking a seachange, she and her family moved to north Queensland where they created a multi-million dollar waterfront property development.

At 48, she had it all, except the one thing she’d spent her entire life chasing: the deep contentment that comes from knowing your true calling.

It was a near death experience that provided the breakthrough she was looking for.  Instead of seeing the proverbial light or hearing a choir of angels, the voice that came to her simply stated:  

“Janet, you’ve let everyone down.”

In that second she knew precisely what  it meant. What she thought was selfless sacrifice in looking after her family and chain of businesses was in fact selfishness. She had denied herself and the world her great gift as a teacher.

Janet would spend the next 9 years immersing herself in Personal Development, gaining certification in NLP, Blair Singer’s Train the Trainer, Making the Stage, Master Facilitator, Ultimate Personal Development Program and Accelerated Learning and Master of Self Expression with Larry Gilman.

A lifetime of studying human nature and her rollercoaster of successes and failures became the basis for her breakthrough workshops.

As Janet says, “I’ve spent 40 years figuring out my place on the planet and if I can empower others to do the same and save them a decade or two in the process, I’ve done my job.”

Maria Konnikova, who has her Ph.D in psychology and studies human behavior, had never played poker when she approached Eric Seidel, a renowned player of the game, asking him to show her the ropes. Eric agreed to be her coach and Maria spent a year working towards the World Series of Poker, playing in numerous tournaments and winning a major title and hundreds of thousands of dollars along the way. But the real prize she was after in this experimental endeavor wasn't money, but insight into the intersection between skill and luck, and how much control we humans have over our fate.

She got those insights in spades, and shares them in her latest book: The Biggest Bluff: How I Learned to Pay Attention, Master Myself, and Win. Today on the show Maria explains why the poker table may be the best place to learn about the balance between chance and skill, and why we have such trouble untangling those two forces. We then get into how gambling has long been an interest of philosophers and led to advancements in probability theory, as well as why understanding the dynamics of betting allows us to improve ourselves. Maria then shares how she learned to detach herself from the outcomes of hands and concentrate only on what she could control, and how liberating it is to separate process from results. She describes the connection between poker and Sherlock Holmes, and how the game helped her not just see things but observe them. We then delve into the biases that get you off track with your goals, and the simple technique you can use to overcome them. We end our conversation with Maria's conclusions on the respective roles luck and skill play in our lives.
