Just when you think you’ve heard it all along comes a story that proves you haven’t! Jordan Formichelli sat with me to talk about the musical she stars in called….(ready for this?) “Lizzie”. Yup. A musical about Lizzie Borden. And not just a musical. A VERY loud rock musical about Lizzie Borden. 

Who knew such a thing existed? Not me!!! An excellent and intriguing dive into “Lizzie”, the rock musical at the Hatbox Theatre in Concord!

Jordan Formichelli, aka Lizzie Borden, drops by for an update on the production “Lizzie” in its’ final weekend at the Hatbox Theatre (http://www.hatboxnh.com) in Concord. This time she brought friends! Olivia Martinson, the director of the show, and Tim Goss, the musical director. We talk about what it’s like to attempt to stage a rock musical at the intimate little theatre as well as what it was like for Olivia to take on the project as a first time director.

We also discussed the audience reactions to this dark, but, beautiful piece that they’ve staged.

Composition for piano and flute.

The Man in the Shadow expresses the battle between the human and the everyday stress in his/hers modern way of leaving. The piano imitates the primitive feel of a constant hidden threat, the stress, while the flute imitates the "weak" and "afraid" human who is trying to fight this invisible threat. 

The piece starts with the piano playing a descending, from the highest to the lowest register, melodic motive. This descent represents the birth of the fear as the melody is  transformed from an airily to a dark and compact sound, due to the change of the register. In general the piano has the role of a solid ground, mostly by keeping a steady pulse with crotchets at the left hand and minims or triplets of crotchets and quavers at the right one. In addition its heavy arrangement, in some parts with octaves on both hands, makes it sound very strong and fearful against the smooth sound of the flute, reinforcing that way the feel of the unbalanced battle between the "fragile" human and his/her strong inner fears. 

When the motive at the piano is at the lowest register, the flute is introduced in an unusual way by playing and emphasizing its lowest and weakest note, the middle C.
In general the flute is played in an opposite of its usual high pitched and lightsome role, as it moves mostly at its low areas. Even when it is played at its high register, the rhythmic value of the melody, usually crotchets, triplets, and minims, makes it sound heavy and solid, instead of its familiar light and playful sound.  

The tonal center is the F and is emphasized mostly at the upbeats, keeping that way the feel of the tension high. At this tension contributes also the ambiguous harmony which is shifting at the first part between the keys of F Major, F Minor and F Lydian, and respectively at the dominant C, at the second part of the piece. The tempo ranges between 68 - 72 BPM and the genre style tends to the jazz, mostly because of the harmony, but is not as it has many elements from classical music as well.
