Nothing Is In Vain

This was an unexpected piece to round off another year after the acquisition of the wonderful VSL YMIR children's choir library. Well what can you do except compose a piece using it ;-)

Given the time of year a seasonal piece made sense and once I had a title then I was away. I also took the opportunity to practice orchestral wooshes (they are a thing). The ones in this piece comprise a cymbal roll, a timpani roll and a harp gliss.  

Many of the instruments employed here like glockenspiel and tubular bells are popular in this type of music and obviously sleigh bells make an appearance. I took the liberty of quoting 'Deck the Halls' in some places too.

I wanted a dream sequence in the middle of the piece which is mainly choir and alto flute, although the glockenspiel and percussion makes an appearance. It acts as a nice contrast to the general festive sleigh ride feel.

This track started off as a piano melody that Morten sent to me for some singing practice. I was really inspired by the melody and I wrote some lyrics very quickly and then sang them. Morten continued working on the backing track and I really fell in love with it even more. My aim is to re-record the vocals at some point with an upgraded mic.

Marcus Fischer https://soundcloud.com/marcus_fischer kindly provided 7 loops for this project. All his loops are integrated in the track, and it begins and ends with clear segments of them, as a way to acknowledge his generosity.
After listening to all the loops I thought that some of them could be stacked, some of them extended, and some of them stretched, in order to create a basic flow and tonal framework. The track includes some drum machines and processing of the original loops by means of pitch-delayed transpositions, harmonizations, distortions, etc., everything spiced with a bit of reverbs and delays.
The track made me think of a sunrise, moving from dawn to some frantic activity, to achieve rest again. And this idea made Monet's painting pop up in my mind.

We're happy to announce that we're back with a new song. Thanks so much for listening and continuing to support us even though we were on hiatus.

Composed to be part of the soundtrack for our story series 'Parallel Tales'. This song is essentially the theme song for the elf enchantress 'Ashara'. Written in 2023 to be part of the upcoming album called 'Realms'. Art by Masha.
