First, I string words together into a dirt road tapestry, an anthem for the traveling man, a lament for the weary rambler.
Then, I find the right musical setting for the lyric amidst the minor tones of the piano, pounding octaves on the left hand and swirling grace notes on the right hand.
The melody, it comes to me, finger-painting in the wilderness, and from the ashes of fire a song is born. Then the newly minted song is taken into the studio and layered with guitar, bass and percussion, with banjo, mandolin, and accordion. Collaborators add new ideas and the song begins to take on a new life.
The song is mixed and mastered and polished with that good old fashioned country shine. And here you have the finest of my shined shoes, a collection of my best, somewhere between earth and sky, where the mockingbird sings, Somewhere East of Oklahoma.
