This song is, in a way, my ode to Scatterbrain's "Don't Call Me Dude!" It's a song about a love triangle in one person with multiple personality disorder and was given to me as a project. I was given a scenario (you get into your car and notice that an address has been programmed in, so you delete it. The next day you get into your car and the address has been reprogrammed and now there's a map on the front seat with the address circled), and this was what I came up with. Personality 1 (a male) is in love with personality 2 (a female) but has no idea that personality 3 (a male) is now on the scene. Personality 3 wants personality 2 to themselves, so tries to get personality 1 "deleted" by sending him to the psych ward.

This song was written when I felt like all hope was lost. The seed of the song came about a week after I received divorce papers. Up until that point I had hoped my marriage could be saved, but this song is about that hope being smashed and replaced with hopelessness, emptiness, and despair. Don't worry though, there's another chapter to come yet: Golden Heart (Part III - Healing)!

Exhale Sorrow (Part II: Despair)

Everything always seems so much clearer in hindsight. The decisions we should have made are obvious, the people and things we should have avoided... hindsight is perfectly clear. In the moment though, it's a virtual reality because we don't know the future. We don't know that a pandemic will sweep the globe, or that our data will be mined, or that things will just be, not quite right, that regular service transmissions will be disrupted and that even the most beautiful things will be seen through a lens tainted by fear and misinformation. We should have seen it; we should have known, because hindsight's always 2020!

Intro track for my album, 2020 Hindsight. This was my first go on Cubase. I haven't done home recording since using my old Fostex 4-Track tape recorder in about 1990, so this was a lot of fun to do. It was made using all virtual instruments.

The Japanese have an art form called kintsuri (or kintsukuroi) where they repair broken pottery with melted gold, not only increasing the value, but drawing attention to the imperfection. I came up with the idea of using this as a metaphor for healing a broken heart. Funnily enough, the verses are haiku's, which was actually a coincidence, so I continued with the Japanese theme and used a taiko drum to hold the rhythm together. This song is dedicated to Ben, a young man who committed suicide the day I was finishing this song. Rest in peace my young brother.
