TRICK - PROD. EIN (Genesis)

I worked on a ship filming in the caribbean for three years. This track describes sailing out of dry dock in Norfolk, Virginia and having the one and only big storm at sea I encountered back then (ships usually sail around them!). It was both awe inspiring and exhilarating - for me. For staff having to clean the amount of vomit, not so much. After the storm we arrived, off-course, in the Yucatan, South Mexico.
Thanks for the samples Ian Collins - I used two - "Dusty chords C maj 110bpm" and "C String Unsteady" - the rest is some foley and some synths - Elysium, Novum, Monolith and Cloud Supply and some of the excellent NI instrument "Lores". Hopefully this is good for getting into a trance like state - I nodded off into a dream myself when listening back.! Comments welcome!

Compose a piece of music with three times as much silence as sound.

Once again, I did not exactly follow the assignment. 75% is a lot of silence... but I had fun creating a piece of music in a style different from what I usually do. I will definitely consider incorporating more silence into my future work.

I had to get old to fully understand the lesson my grandmother started teaching me, by word and example, when I was about nine or ten. One helped me come to be comfortable when talking about my own mortality and the passing of time. The song we are sharing here speaks to her advice that time keeps on keeping on until it doesn't, and as she would say, "...use every day up doing good and being kind and don't be worrying about what is in other hands!" The older I get, the better her lesson sinks in. For me her lesson has been a guide and a gift! I'm not sure she would have picked the music, but that was in our hands. This is not a sad song. If there's wisdom, it is hers!

In The Blink Of An Eye

Been meaning to get around to posting something to a Disquiet Junto, and since this Junto is about finally getting around to something this seemed like a good time to jump in.

Musically the idea is to do music for meditators, similar to the sound bath genre. Sound Bath music usually uses sounds associated with Buddhism, like gongs and bells from Tibet. I find those instruments a little corny, appropriated, exoticist. My background is americana and folk. That's what I can play in an authentic way. So the main instruments here are from bluegrass - an old Gibson mandolin and a National steel guitar. In addition to those I'm playing a synthesizer, an Arturia Microfreak, using a bell sound that recalls traditional sound bath influences. All of these sounds are passing through a Microcosm pedal, which adds some classic ambient flavors like delay, glitching, and heavy reverb. The song that this is all based on is a fiddle tune called "The Black Water Fall."
