What sound captures the mystery and infinite potential of a Thursday night at Burning Man?

The warmth of the sun dissipated and the dusty city had gone electric, so I traded in my upbeat daytime disco sounds for a deeper shadowy sound: "dark funk."  To me, dark funk is syncopated bass lines, pitched-down vocals, and muscular drums… all with enough space to let each polished instrument stand out.

This is my Thursday night set (10:30-11:30PM) on the Sugar Cubes, an instant landmark in their first year on the Esplanade skyline.  Big thanks to Alex & Charles Green, Keegan Olton, Dan Kaminsky, and the rest of the team that brought the Cubes to life this year-- it was an absolute pleasure to play on them.

phantom groove

As I've been discovering ever more incredible sounds to share, the ones that have resonated most are tracks that start with infectious rhythmic and vocal hooks and then accompany that foundation with organic, shimmering textures.

Near the end of 2013, friends created two special opportunities where I could share  these sounds.  The first set accompanied an Ocean Beach sunrise on an unusually vibrant winter morning.  The second set brought in the new year at magical Isis Oasis.  

This soundcloud set is an edited combination of the two sets, starting with the textures of dawn and concluding with the new year's moonlight.  It also includes a new experiment where I recorded friends and dispersed their playful and reflective messages throughout.

Much gratitude to the community of friends both old and new who are on a mission to create special and unexpected experiences for us to share.  It's an incredible pleasure being able to provide a musical backdrop to some of it.

This set was my soundtrack to this month's Last Thursdays at the SUB, which also featured laser-cut geometric plywood, sous-vide pulled pork, and hand-crafted lavender-infused witbier.

To match this multi-sensory experience, I sought out sounds that also reshape the familiar and organic into unusual new forms.  To me, this feels like acoustic drums, ethereal vocals, playful polyrhythms and syncopation.  

This set contains a few surprises beyond the tracks.  Loops and samples preview timbres, while the starts and ends of tracks are stretched and filtered to make long and dreamlike transitions.  I enjoyed trying new techniques and playing with these sounds-- hope you enjoy listening.

After a serene day of sunshine on the sand, darkness fell and the nighttime sea enforced its deep oceanic chill.  This sound represents the darker side of the beach: relentless tides, gritty rock and coarse sand, the icy abyss.

This set was recorded live deep in the night (1:30-3:00am) at the 2014 edition of Every Day I Dream of Dancing On The Beach at Tunitas Beach in Half Moon Bay, California.  

Massive kudos to Trip Vest, Chris Skieller, Ashley Hanna, Jayson Morgan, and the countless others who put this ambitious and dreamlike event together.

One year after my unforgettable set on the Sugar Cubes, the Monks of Funk kindly hosted me at their expansive and iconic Dance Church at 7:15 and B on Wednesday 8/27.  This set includes many of the tracks that I played that night with a few saucy extras for good measure.

Thrilled to be participating in my dear friend Kelsey's grand experiment to create "a collaborative soundtrack to one full glorious day of life--start to finish."

This mix is the soundtrack I've imagined for the golden hour between 6-7pm (18:00-19:00), when the light is vivid and saturated and the shadows are stretched. This hour is one long, cathartic exhale after basking in the sunshine... and by the end of it, the sky has become dark and the air brisk.

In the last 13 years of DJing, I’ve gone through a lot of journeys: funky and accessible, textured and deep, soft and restrained, warm and driving, slow and punchy.

But these last couple years have felt uncertain. I shed my old DJ name “popstack” and wanted to unify my sound into something reliable and recognizable. What sound would that be? 

In recent sets, I’ve leaned towards deep and groovy. Yet sometimes things felt missing. Sometimes you just wanna hear sharp, glossy vocal hooks right alongside skittering, challenging breakbeats; hypnotic drums that make you lose your sense of place, punctuated by ethereal moments.

On one weekend in May 2014, Half Moon Bay turned into an electric, fiery burst of life and I was super fortunate to soundtrack it for a couple of hours. That set was a turning point for me — I adopted a darker, harder-hitting sound brimming with organic percussion and a few breakbeats here and there. I’ve carried that sound with me in every set I’ve played since then.

So when the 2015 edition of Every Day I Dream Of Dancing On The Beach came around, I couldn’t wait to do it all again. This 1:00-3:00am set revisits the expansive darkness as well as fire from last year’s set, and ends on a similarly tranquil note.

Hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed assembling this.

For the first time in years, I’ll be sitting out this burn.

Some of my most cherished musical memories were forged out there in the dust among lifelong friends. Where else can you watch the sunrise reflected in a giant golden dragon that’s blanketing the desert in warm sound? Or play music on futuristic light art sculptures and cathedrals built by friends? What madness.

Here’s a studio mix I quickly assembled tonight so that my loved ones (especially one in particular) can take a piece of me out there in spirit since I’ll be missing in body. This mix is a little less hard-hitting than some other recent sets that were recorded live - instead, I imagined this mix soundtracking a friend's sunset drive through the desert, or maybe chilling under the moon with a good set of headphones.

To all of you burning this year — have a transcendent time and get yourselves back in one piece, ya hear?

Everywhere I went this winter, I was followed by warmth. A December stint in NYC led to t-shirts in a 60-degree night. In Louisville, I had my whiskeys in a windbreaker. LA was only kiiinda cold - and only by LA standards. This mix provides a bit of sonic warmth to match the weather and provide some heat everywhere else it's needed - not blinding heat, just gentle embers. 

This mix is also my 2015 musical reflection. As I look back at soundcloud mixes over the past couple years, I'm realizing that most of them were either recordings from big energetic parties or compilations that featured my favorite dance floor tracks.  

My last studio mix that I put together for the burn ("Us") was intended for headphone or car listening and thus it was more tender and restrained than the thumpier, techier tracks I generally play out.

This latest winter mix follows that trend. It features a handful of airy and sparse tracks that I love (but might put a dance floor to sleep); bouncy, funky tracks to keep the pulse going; and finally a couple of detours into dark and punchy territory.

This mix represents the 07:00-08:00 hour of the 2016 00:00-24:00 mix project, where 24 selectors have each soundtracked one hour of the day.

07:00-08:00 is often the first waking hour of my day, a transition from the dream world to the day. From clouds to sky, moon to sunshine. From haze to focus. From restfulness to motion.

Yet in that first hour, it's not a clean transition. I float from one side back to the other, trying each mood on for size. Snoozing. Breakfast. Exercise. Meditating. Reading. Gradually, the momentum builds and pushes towards a bright, full day.

My early Soundcloud mixes were pulled from my upbeat live sets, and I loved listening and reliving the high intensity of a great party. Catch me live and I'll still try to make you sweat.

But in the past year or so, I've been fascinated by the possibilities offered by the studio. There's space to let more delicate tracks breathe, and time to find just the right bookends for them so that they are not over- or underwhelmed.

So, this mix (mostly) isn't a dance party - but there's still some heat. There are many crispy, atmospheric sounds with delicate melodies...and the occasional driving track to keep things lively.
