The first movement of "3 Perceptions for Bassoon & String Quartet." "Real Illusion" is inspired by a lyric in a song written by Yoko Kanno and presents thematic elements that are built upon throughout the rest of the work. I aimed to use extended string techniques for their interesting aural qualities. Written under the tutelage of Richard Auldon Clark and Dr. Frank Felice.

Program Note: "Written for my bassoonist brother, 3 Perceptions for Bassoon & String Quartet is a love letter to our favorite anime and video game soundtracks and the culmination of my studies at Butler University. Each movement represents a different contradiction and presents varying characters as well. There are many hidden references to the music of Yoko Kanno, Yoko Shimomura, Joe Hisaishi, and others sprinkled throughout. Classical inspirations include Bartok, Vaughan Williams, Stravinsky, Pärt, and Reich."

3 Perceptions for Bassoon & String Quartet ~ Mov. I. Real Illusion

The second movement of "3 Perceptions for Bassoon & String Quartet." "Waking Dream" develops a theme presented in the first movement. This theme is very loosely based on a tune that is briefly hummed by a character in one of my favorite shows. Written under the tutelage of Richard Auldon Clark.

3 Perceptions for Bassoon & String Quartet ~ Mov. II. Waking Dream

An arrangement my friend Haley Stevenson and I put together for her recital. Shiro, Long Tails is a track on the 2nd Wolf's Rain Original Soundtrack by Yoko Kanno and the "Shiro" theme itself is utilized in various forms throughout the show. We initially just planned to make it a string quartet, but quickly decided the sweeping orchestral sound would not have been captured without the double bass.

Premiered at Natalie Cole and Haley Stevenson's sophomore recital, we had a ton of fun putting this together and the performers were awesome!

I wrote this Tango mostly because I wanted to see how well I can emulate the style! Also my gf loves Argentine tango music, so she was a big inspiration. :)

The prompt for this cue was to tell a story 3 sections. A dark mysterious section establishing a theme, a tense section representing a journey into hell, and a peaceful section after the conflict has passed. I took it in an exotic direction because I've always wanted to utilize gamelan instruments!
