"For this one we wanted to drop the tempo of the original  and add some thump to bring out more of a disco groove. We also wanted to bring together unlikely bedfellows in the electric guitar and the trombone to lead the instrumentation, changing it up from the synth-iness of Pho's original track, while maintaining a lot of the cool rhythm elements. In the end though - as with any track that Alanna Stuart is the featured singer - it's mostly the voice."

From The Souljazz Orchestra: "Kossa Kossa" was inspired by late 70s/early 80s West African disco and boogie music.  "Kossa" was initially a type of Duala dance in  Cameroon, which later became "Makossa", the style popularized by Manu Dibango, but we really flipped the genre around and made it our own.  It's probably the Souljazz tune with the most "electronic" elements ever, since we used an old analog monosynth and a Roland 808 drum machine for the first time, along with our usual acoustic instruments."

From TIMEKODE: "For this song we really picked up the tempo a lot from the original to take it from the disco/boogie world and give it more of a house / broken-beat feeling.  We also brought the full palette of sampled and synthesized drums and bass to give the SJO a boom and rattle that only drum machines can provide. Leaning heavily on the original parts, this remix takes the song and the listener on a journey from a club in West Africa on a Saturday night circ. 1976, to an after-hours in the UK on Sunday morning circ. 2016, and back."

Following the international buzz of the Ottawa-focussed Volume 1, the next edition TIMEKODE's regional remix trilogy focusses on two great bands from Montreal. Freak Motif and Dark Maat'r are remixed by TK's Memetic and special MTL guest remixer, Scott C of the legendary Montreal party institution The Goods. Both songs take the listener on an unexpected journey, as they focus on the subject of state sanctioned violence by police in different ways respectively; making for a timely and thoughtful release in these troubled times. Included are alternate takes of both songs, offering four tracks with four funky perspectives on this social ill.

Black Lives Matter, period. The next volume of the TIMEKODE X remix series closes in on the issue of police violence. 

On Running For Your Love (TIMEKODE No Love Remix), Memetic transforms a soon-to-be-released mellow love song by Freak Motif featuring Lady C into a rousing Hip-Hop anthem about the twisted love police seem to have for black and minority bodies. Featuring recordings of newscasts + infamous incidents of police violence, and urgent verses from Ottawa rhyme legends Hyfidelik and Bender, this is the lead single from TIMEKODE X Vol. 2 - Freak Motif x Dark Maat'r (MTL) coming in September.

FROM FREAK MOTIF: 'Running From Your Love' is the 2nd release from Freak Motif featuring Lady C. The hypnotic groove was originally written as a heavy afrobeat riff, the Freaks' bread and butter. But the mystery and longing of the mellow hiphop groove just felt right. Lady C's lyrics tell the story of a love gone wrong, the vulnerability and confusion of being trapped in a relationship when you 'just can't seem to get away'. Once again featuring the Busty and the Bass horns (and keys!), Running From Your Love will be released on Freak Motif's upcoming album 'Hot Plate'.

FROM TIMEKODE: It feesl like with the police, if you're black or racialized, it doesn't matter whether you comply or run anymore. At the same time when we listened to Lady C’s lyrics, the idea of trying to run from a force that’s supposed to be positive but actually has an appetite for destroying you was really compelling too. Musically, the idea was to give it a harder edge with the new drums + bass groove, and to use audio from newsclips and known incidents to re-contextualize the lyrics about love in a surreal kind of way. The ideas and performances provided by Hyf and Bender tied this Hiphop remix together.

(Scott C's Love Yourself Remix) Scott C took a track that had only existed as a live recording, and organized an intimate recording session in one of Montreal's iconic studios (which we can't name) in order to get the stems to remix it properly.  Featuring the inimitable voice of Malika Tirolien with the  counterbalancing narrative voice of Asatta Shakur, this remix takes Dark Maat'r's spiritual jazz epic to another world. Watch for the switch-up near the end.
