Polish hardcore/no-wave/punk, initially released in 2012 on cassette, but re-released on vinyl in 2017 by the discerning folks at Sweet Rot Records.

Weirdo from the get-go, the opening riff sounds already crumbled, giving way to a distorted stop-and-go punk rhythm recalling the crisp digital percussion of Frau(2013). Vocals are of the Desperate Bicycles/The Ex register, with some scrambled electronics thrown in to top it all off.

Lackadaisical sax-laced dubby garage post-punk, half-sung with bright guitar passages. Reminds me of when the sky clears as I'm heading to my practice space.

Synth and drummy post-punk by two annoying people—not my quote—from, I don't know, Berlin? Yes, this bedroom project shows high aspirations of conceptual nihilism in a rudimentary collage way. The album title is a doozy—stoner humor. First you hear a helicopter, then a drumbeat, and a great use of spatial placement. The lyrics are about something too political and philosophical to expound upon here, but worth a listen.

The Suburban Homes is one of many projects from Paul Messis, who is a musical anomaly in the landscape of music worldwide with an unlimited output, always great, in the genres of punk, psychedelia, and straight up rock. Suburban Homes is so good, more than half of DIY bands could use it as a model. At least they would fail interestingly, rather than just claim of being musicians inadvertently.

Mr. Airplane Man - "I'm In Love" (2017)

Not punk, but still hits that sweet spot in DIY pop. Kind of reminds me of Animals & Men (UK, 1978-82). This is from Holland, in 1981. Recently re-released by German label Discos Transgénero in a nifty artful colored vinyl edition (50$CAD). This song is so "gold" that it automatically becomes an instant must-own classic. The new release comes with the band's more ambient pop experiments, and none of the euro-accented, half-spoken half-sung vocals of this single. I'll be drinking from the bottle containing this lightning.

How To Get Rich In Rotterdam - "Dapper Dan" (1981)

Delving further into the repurposed post-grunge noise garage from the early aughts. Sure enough, A Frames were signed to Sub Pop, and this sounds like a fuzz-noise update of early Sonic Youth. This is a derivative of so much that I don't know about yet (Swell Maps, Belgian DIY, UK DIY), and has also spawned its own babies (Useless Eaters, Black Time). I'm happy to dig further and discover other stuff of the same kind.

It's that time again...From the depths of the underground of Denton,TX comes the affront to hardcore punk, mutated rock'n'roll, and dreamy pop trash, that can't be categorized. Not exactly glam-rock a la Giant Dog, not exactly jerky Devo/Screamers, and not exactly Midwest Garage, Razorbumps carves its own space outside of defined limits of genre. Pop maybe, in an alternate timeline where all radio acts can be hologramed? Think about it!

Max Roach Quintet - That Ole Devil Love

Barbier has been recording and performing in Montreal for a number of years. Previous projects include Moss Lime (Telephone Explosion Records) and Phern (Fixture Records). As a solo artist, she makes strangely subdued pop w angular moves, and throbbing basslines. First single "The Good Thing" hit the spot with subtle synth and a surprising violin solo. This one here is  more shamrackle to keep things slightly misaligned. That misalignment is the point! DIY, no-wave, post-punk, funk, that slaps!

This release is on Erika Elizabeth's (Collate, Futures and Pasts) new label, Domestic Departure. The art looks sick, possibly printed in two-tone RISO.  A collector's item for sure. I'm happy to see the Pacific Northwest connecting: Oakland and Portland! Hoping for a series of upcoming releases to tumble.

The track is a cover from The Exploited that updates the original punk ripper through a new-wave filter. This is like using the brand new automatic car wash instead of the usual 3-guys-in-garage who steal your money from the golve compartment.
